Last week, I drove past one of the most important buildings in America.

I did not know its name.

There was no monumental sign. No tour guide. No gift shop. No schoolchildren spilling out of buses. No bronze plaque commemorating the great events that had occurred there. No flashing lights, no neon arrow proclaiming “Computers Are Us,” no stone computers perched like gargoyles along the roofline.

Apparently, civilization prefers to hide its monuments in plain sight.

The building was substantial, orderly, and carefully finished. It could have been an office building, the headquarters of an engineering firm, or some exceptionally well-housed municipal department.

It might simply have been storage.

And in a sense, it was.

It was a data center.

Inside that building lived pieces of our collective lives.

Photographs.

Emails.

Bank records.

Medical histories.

Family memories.

Arguments.

Love letters.

Searches made at two in the morning.

Questions we would never ask another human being—or would ask only after first clearing our browser history.

The building contained fragments of millions of people. Yet almost nobody driving past it appeared to know what it was.

We know where our city halls are.

We know where our churches are.

We know where our libraries are.

We know where our schools are.

But most of us have no idea where our civilization actually lives.

For most of human history, the buildings that contained a society’s memory and power were deliberately visible.

The cathedral stood at the center of town.

The courthouse occupied the public square.

The library announced itself with columns and grand staircases.

The bank built a marble temple to its own permanence, shortly before lending you money against yours.

Today, some of our most consequential buildings resemble ordinary warehouses, offices, and industrial buildings. They sit along familiar streets and at the edges of cities—architecturally composed, operationally discreet, and largely absent from public consciousness.

But they are not empty sheds.

They are the storehouses of modern memory. They are the factories of artificial intelligence. They are the counting houses of global commerce. They are the private libraries into which humanity has deposited its photographs, correspondence, finances, medical histories, movements, habits, desires, and fears.

We call all of this the cloud, as though our civilization had floated gently into the atmosphere.

It has not.

The cloud is architecture.

The cloud is land.

The cloud is electricity.

The cloud is water.

The cloud is labor.

The cloud is ownership.

The cloud is power.

The cloud, in other words, is remarkably heavy for something named after the weather.

And every part of it exists somewhere.

That realization led me to an uncomfortable question:

Who owns the roads our thoughts travel on?

I had assumed Amazon owned Amazon’s cloud, Microsoft owned Microsoft’s, and Google owned Google’s. Broadly speaking, that is true—but it does not mean these companies own every acre of land, building, cable, generator, cooling plant, or server rack that keeps their clouds aloft.

I still didn’t know what the hell Salesforce did. It turns out Salesforce sells corporate civilization by subscription: customer records, sales leads, complaints, contracts, and all the other bureaucratic sediment of commerce. And now we know.

But even Salesforce must live somewhere. Its cloud runs largely on infrastructure supplied by other cloud companies, which, in turn, depends on physical buildings that Salesforce may neither own nor occupy.

The ownership of the cloud is layered.

One company may own the land. Another may own the building. A third may operate it. A fourth may lease a secured room inside it. A fifth may provide the electricity. A sixth may own the fiber carrying the information away.

By the time you discover who owns the place, you may need another data center just to store the organizational chart.

And somewhere at the end of this chain is a photograph of your mother.

The physical infrastructure of memory has become a form of commercial real estate.

Some data centers are owned directly by the great technology companies. Others belong to publicly traded real-estate investment trusts such as Digital Realty and Equinix. Still others are controlled by private-equity firms, infrastructure funds, insurance capital, pension money, and sovereign investors.

Blackstone acquired QTS Data Centers in a deal valued at roughly $10 billion. KKR and Global Infrastructure Partners bought CyrusOne for approximately $15 billion. Vantage Data Centers attracted billions more in investment from DigitalBridge and Silver Lake.

You didn’t know that, did you? I certainly didn’t.

These vast digital empires are being bought, sold, and assembled while the rest of us are sleeping, sipping cocktails, or lamenting the death of downtown.

Some of us may therefore own tiny pieces of these buildings through our retirement funds without knowing where the buildings are, who occupies them, or what they contain.

We may be both the product and the landlord, which is one way of achieving vertical integration.

The cloud does not merely have an owner.

It has landlords, tenants, lenders, utilities, contractors, investors, tax agreements, water rights, zoning entitlements, and electrical contracts.

It has nearly everything a city has—except citizens.

The early internet was imagined as a decentralized network: a system without a single indispensable center, capable of routing information around damaged or unavailable points.

Yet over time, something curious happened.

We rebuilt the center.

Not necessarily through conspiracy.

Not necessarily through malice.

We rebuilt it through convenience. Through efficiency. Through scale. Through habit.

The roads became highways.

The highways became toll roads.

The toll roads became kingdoms.

The kingdoms gave us free shipping.

And now an astonishing portion of human life passes through infrastructure controlled by a relatively small number of corporations and investment interests.

This is not simply an accusation against the people who built it.

The builders of the modern cloud have accomplished extraordinary things. They have created forms of communication, scientific inquiry, commerce, creativity, and access to knowledge that earlier generations could scarcely have imagined.

They have made it possible for a person to consult the collected knowledge of humanity while sitting in bed, avoiding the collected responsibilities of the morning.

The question is not whether these builders are good or evil.

The question is whether the rest of us understand what they have built, where it exists, what resources it consumes, and what we have entrusted to it.

Amazon publicly identifies American cloud regions such as Northern Virginia, Ohio, Northern California, and Oregon. But a region is not one building. It contains multiple “availability zones,” and each zone may contain one or more physically separate data centers.

A dot on the cloud map may therefore represent a constellation of buildings.

Microsoft describes a worldwide Azure infrastructure spanning hundreds of secured facilities, while generally identifying broad metropolitan regions rather than publishing a directory of street addresses.

Google is somewhat more forthcoming. It identifies major data-center locations in Virginia, Oregon, Iowa, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Nevada, Texas, and elsewhere.

These buildings are not placed randomly.

They follow electricity.

They follow fiber-optic cables.

They follow water.

They follow affordable land.

They follow favorable tax agreements.

They follow public officials eager to announce investment.

They follow communities that may not yet understand what they are being asked to host.

Nothing in America moves faster than a public official toward a podium bearing the words economic development.

American civilization now has physical neighborhoods.

One of the largest is in Northern Virginia, around Ashburn, Sterling, Loudoun County, and Prince William County. Others have emerged around Dallas–Fort Worth, Phoenix, Chicago, central Ohio, Oregon, Iowa, Georgia, the Carolinas, New Jersey, and Silicon Valley.

Here in the Bay Area, the cloud is not floating above us. It is sitting in San Francisco, Oakland, Santa Clara, San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Palo Alto.

Consider 720 Second Street in Oakland.

It does not crouch behind a chain-link fence looking guilty.

It is a substantial, well-maintained, four-story building near Jack London Square. Its warm, earth-toned exterior is carefully composed. Strong horizontal lines organize the façade. Dark recessed openings give it rhythm and depth. The entrance is formal, the lobby polished, the architecture restrained but respectable.

At first glance, I assumed it was an older industrial building that had been repurposed as a data center. It looks as though it belongs to Oakland’s historic warehouse district.

But the present building was constructed around 2001 as a data center.

Its physical resemblance to an older warehouse may have been an intentional contextual design choice. Rather than importing a futuristic glass box or erecting a blank concrete bunker, its designers appear to have borrowed the massing, proportions, and visual rhythm of the industrial buildings surrounding it.

It is a new technological building wearing the architectural clothes of an older Oakland.

It might be an office building.

It might be the headquarters of an engineering firm.

It might contain architects, accountants, attorneys, or some exceptionally well-housed municipal department.

It might simply be storage.

And in a sense, it is.

It is storage not in the old physical sense—crates, furniture, machinery, and merchandise—but in the data sense.

Behind its composed urban exterior are roughly 50,000 square feet of raised computer floor, large electrical transformers, seven emergency generators, eight industrial chillers, reserve-water tanks, secured equipment cages, and connections to more than fifteen internet providers. The old warehouse stored the physical goods of civilization.

The data center stores civilization itself.

The building does not hide by appearing dangerous.

It disappears by appearing familiar.

That is not necessarily a criticism.

Data centers contain critical infrastructure, private records, financial systems, medical information, and the machinery upon which governments and businesses depend. There are perfectly legitimate reasons not to advertise every entrance, cable route, server room, and security system.

I do not need a guided tour of the room containing my bank records.

I am not sure the gift shop would be very good anyway.

But the building’s ordinary appearance raises another set of questions.

How much electricity does it consume?

Where does that electricity come from?

How much water does it use?

How often do its emergency generators operate?

What fuel do they burn?

What happens to the heat produced by thousands of machines working day and night?

The building may be discreet for security’s sake.

Its environmental footprint should not be.

No contemporary figure has made the physical reality of artificial intelligence clearer than Elon Musk.

In Memphis, a former Electrolux factory was transformed into Colossus, the enormous computing system developed to train Grok and other artificial-intelligence models.

Musk named it Colossus, because apparently Moderately Ambitious Computer lacked grandeur.

The conversion is almost too symbolically perfect.

A building that once manufactured appliances for human households now manufactures intelligence for machines.

The industrial shell remains, but the nature of production has changed. Refrigerators and ovens no longer depart through the loading docks. The new products are models, predictions, language, images, decisions, and machine-generated answers.

That speed is presented as evidence of genius—and perhaps it is.

But speed has material consequences.

A city may deliberate for ten years over a rail line, five years over affordable housing, and three years over a public library.

A private company can arrive, fill an industrial building with hundreds of thousands of processors, install power-generating equipment, and alter the electrical and environmental future of an entire community before most residents understand what is being built.

We can train an artificial intelligence before we can schedule the third public hearing about it.

The machine moves at machine speed.

Public accounting does not.

Colossus is not simply a computer inside a building.

It is a new industrial organism.

It requires land, substations, transmission lines, cooling systems, water, fiber-optic cables, batteries, security, generators, and fleets of gas turbines. It possesses many of the systems of a city while remaining under private command.

It is practically a municipality, except that the servers do not vote, attend school-board meetings, or complain about potholes.

And it does not stop at the state line.

The expanding Memphis–Southaven complex crosses Tennessee and Mississippi. Its buildings, turbines, electrical infrastructure, water demands, tax agreements, and environmental effects may fall under different governments while functioning as parts of one computational system.

The machine experiences the region as a single territory.

Only the public is divided by jurisdiction.

Mississippi announced in January 2026 that xAI would invest more than $20 billion in a Southaven data-center project, calling it the largest private economic-development project in the state’s history. State of Mississippi announcement

The promises are familiar.

Investment.

Jobs.

Innovation.

Global importance.

A place on the technological map.

Nothing says “the future has arrived” quite like a governor standing beside a rendering of a building with no windows.

But the resource demands are physical and local.

In July 2026, Reuters reported that nearly 60 natural-gas turbines had been installed in connection with the Colossus 2 project, primarily on the Mississippi side of the state line. The dispute concerned whether turbines classified as temporary required federal air permits. Mississippi regulators had separately approved construction of 41 permanent gas-fired turbines. The company has maintained that it complied with applicable requirements. Environmental and civil-rights organizations have argued that the turbines impose additional pollution upon predominantly Black communities already carrying a history of industrial exposure.

This is where the cloud ceases to be a metaphor.

In Memphis, the cloud has a smokestack.

The environmental question is not separate from the architecture.

It is the architecture.

The turbines, substations, cooling equipment, wastewater systems, transmission lines, server halls, and surrounding neighborhoods are all parts of the same building project.

We cannot admire the intelligence inside the machine while pretending that the machine has no body.

Nor can we track sustainability solely by searching for a name on the property deed.

Elon Musk may not personally hold title to every parcel, turbine, warehouse, or transmission line associated with the complex. Buildings of this scale are assembled through corporations, subsidiaries, utilities, leases, public agreements, and layers of financing.

Musk may not own every brick.

He controls what the bricks are doing.

Legal title is only one form of responsibility.

If the ownership of the cloud is layered, then its environmental accounting must follow those layers.

Who owns the building?

Who operates the equipment?

Who purchases the electricity?

Who owns the generators?

Who controls the cooling system?

Who receives the tax benefit?

Who pays for new transmission infrastructure?

Who receives the output?

Who absorbs the pollution?

Who reports the numbers?

And who verifies them?

These questions are not arguments against data centers.

They are the ordinary questions we should ask of any major industrial system.

A civilization reveals itself through the buildings it chooses to construct.

The pyramids revealed one civilization.

The cathedrals revealed another.

The railroads revealed another.

The skyscrapers revealed another.

What do data centers reveal about us?

They reveal that memory has become industrial.

They reveal that intelligence requires infrastructure.

They reveal that the supposedly weightless digital world is one of the largest physical building projects of our time.

They also reveal that our familiar measures of architecture are no longer sufficient.

We cannot evaluate these buildings only by looking at their façades.

We need to examine their metabolism.

How much electricity enters?

How much water enters?

How much heat leaves?

How much carbon is released?

How much new renewable power is created?

How much equipment is discarded?

What does the host community receive in return?

A data center may purchase renewable-energy certificates and describe its operations as powered by renewable energy. But does the facility actually add new clean generating capacity to the grid? Is its electricity renewable at the hour it is consumed, or merely balanced by renewable purchases at some other place and time?

A cooling system may be described as efficient. But does it consume potable water in a drought-prone region? Does it use reclaimed water? How much evaporates? How much returns to the watershed?

A bank of generators may be described as emergency equipment. But how frequently is it tested? How frequently does it operate? What fuel does it burn, and what does it release into the surrounding air?

A facility may create local tax revenue. But does the community pay for new substations, transmission lines, generating capacity, roads, and water infrastructure? Do residential customers subsidize electrical expansion built principally for enormous corporate loads?

A data center may employ hundreds of construction workers while it is being built. How many permanent workers remain after it opens?

And what happens to the waste heat?

Thousands of processors generate an extraordinary amount of it. Must all that heat simply be expelled into the atmosphere? Could it warm nearby housing, public buildings, schools, greenhouses, or water systems?

These are architectural questions.

They are planning questions.

They are civic questions.

They are questions about what it means to place an enormous machine inside a living community

.

The windowless wall is not necessarily sinister.

There are legitimate reasons for discretion. Data centers contain critical infrastructure, private records, financial systems, medical information, and the machinery upon which governments and businesses depend.

We do not need signs directing every passerby to the server room.

Security requires a certain degree of invisibility.

But sustainability requires disclosure.

I do not need to know precisely which rack contains my medical records.

I do want to know how much water the building used to keep that rack cool.

I do not need a tour of its electrical rooms.

I want to know where its electricity comes from.

I do not need its security plan.

I want its emissions report.

I am not asking the building for windows.

I am asking it for meters.

Machines have owners.

Machines have operators.

Machines have inputs and outputs.

Machines can be measured.

And if they can be measured, they can be evaluated.

But communities are not machines.

Cities are not machines.

Democracies are not machines.

They are living systems.

Messy.

Adaptive.

Interdependent.

Vulnerable.

Unpredictable.

More garden than engine.

More ecosystem than assembly line.

A garden cannot be optimized in the same way as a machine. It must be observed, tended, pruned, nourished, protected, and sometimes allowed to grow in directions the gardener did not anticipate.

It requires patience.

It requires humility.

It requires an understanding that no single organism constitutes the whole.

For two centuries, we have become extraordinarily skilled at building machines.

The next century may require us to become skilled at tending gardens.

That does not mean abandoning technology. It means remembering that every machine exists inside an ecosystem.

The machines must live somewhere.

They must draw electricity from somewhere.

They must use water from somewhere.

Their equipment must be manufactured somewhere.

Their waste must go somewhere.

Their heat must travel somewhere.

Their buildings must stand beside someone.

The most important buildings may have no windows.

That is all right.

But their environmental accounting should be transparent.

There is an old American habit of looking at a downtown after we have spent fifty years dismantling it and asking:

What the hell happened here?

We do this with considerable innocence.

We stand in front of an empty department store, surrounded by parking lots where buildings used to be, beside a freeway that demolished half the neighborhood, and wonder how the place got this way.

It’s a mystery.

Call somebody.

Architects are considerably less innocent.

Once you’ve gone to architecture school, something unfortunate happens to your eyesight. You never quite see the world normally again.

You fly over a city in an airplane and everybody else sees houses.

You see fabric.

Your companion is looking out the window saying, “Look at the swimming pools!”

You’re thinking, Interesting. The nineteenth-century street grid terminates right there.

This is what architecture school does to a person.

You walk through Rome, Berlin, Detroit, Oakland or Stockton and somewhere in the back of your mind you are drawing.

Blocks.

Voids.

Edges.

Streets.

Density.

Interruptions.

Missing pieces.

My professor, mentor and friend John G. Ellis loved figure-ground drawings. In our first architecture studios, he taught us their importance.

We drew them constantly.

For the uninitiated, a figure-ground drawing is one of architecture’s great tricks because it looks almost insultingly simple.

Buildings are black.

Everything that isn’t a building is white.

That’s about it.

Black.

White.

Building.

Not building.

A five-year-old might reasonably ask why this requires a university education.

But there may be no drawing more revealing about a city.

We drew medieval towns. Rome. Berlin. European cities whose names and street patterns I have long since forgotten.

At first, they meant very little to me.

Fine.

Rome has buildings.

I had suspected as much.

Then we began drawing American cities.

More importantly, we drew them over time.

Draw the same downtown in 1900.

Then 1920.

Today.

Now something happens.

Suddenly you aren’t looking at an architectural drawing.

You’re looking at an autopsy.

The black begins disappearing.

A building goes.

Then another.

A street gets wider.

A freeway arrives.

Parking lots appear.

Whole blocks lose their edges.

The dense black fabric begins developing white holes.

Then larger holes.

Then enormous ones.

The city begins losing teeth.

And once architecture school teaches you to see those missing teeth, you’re ruined.

You see them everywhere.

Detroit.

Cleveland.

Buffalo.

Oakland.

Vallejo.

Stockton.

After enough years of this, I don’t even need the drawing anymore.

I make figure grounds in my head

.

I walk down a street and think:

Something was here.

A parking lot occupying half a block tells you something.

A beautiful commercial building standing alone tells you something.

A blank brick wall facing an empty parcel tells you that nobody who designed that wall expected you to be looking at it.

That wall had a neighbor.

Where did the neighbor go?

Now we’re investigating.

The buildings survive.

They stand there waiting for the civilization that built them to come back.

That was when I wanted to go home and pull my copy of Jane Jacobs’s The Death and Life of Great American Cities off the shelf again.

Because Jacobs understood something astonishingly simple.

Cities require people.

Not cars.

Not development plans.

Not decorative banners attached to lampposts.

People.

And not merely consumers.

People with somewhere to be.

That distinction may explain more about the death of the American downtown than almost anything else.

Architecture leaves evidence.

Cities are lousy at hiding the crime scene.

And the last time I experienced this strongly was walking through downtown Stockton.

There it was again.

The pattern.

The missing teeth.

The surviving buildings standing around like witnesses who had been waiting fifty years for somebody to ask them what happened.

And then I saw the Woolworth’s.

The Woolworth’s

Nothing tells the story of an old American downtown quite like a Woolworth’s.

Maybe a Rexall drugstore.

Find either one and you have found an archaeological layer of American civilization.

Somewhere nearby there was probably a bank.

A theater.

A hotel.

A jeweler.

A shoe store.

A barber.

A lunch counter.

A newspaper stand.

Probably a Sears or JCPenney.

And naturally a bar, because civilization requires a little propping up.

There it stood in Stockton.

The Woolworth’s.

Beautiful.

Empty.

Its original architecture was still recognizable, and high on the building the old lettering remained, faded by years of Central Valley sun.

WOOLWORTH’S.

I stopped.

That’s what triggered this essay.

Because I wasn’t looking at an abandoned store anymore.

I was looking at evidence.

Suddenly I could make the old figure ground in my head.

I could see the storefronts continuing down the block.

I could see people on the sidewalks.

I could see the city that belonged to that Woolworth’s.

Somebody once unlocked those doors every morning.

Somebody swept the sidewalk.

Somebody arranged merchandise in the windows.

Someone worked the register.

Someone sat behind the lunch counter.

Children came in clutching coins.

Teenagers wandered the aisles.

Women bought household goods.

Workers stopped in during lunch.

People bumped into neighbors.

People bumped into strangers.

People probably bumped into people they were trying to avoid.

That’s a city too.

Nobody called any of this “community building.”

They were buying socks.

And perhaps that is one of the great things we’ve forgotten about cities.

Ordinary commerce creates extraordinary social life.

Woolworth’s didn’t have a Director of Community Engagement.

It didn’t hire consultants to develop an activation strategy.

It opened the doors.

People came in.

The people created the community.

Now the customers are gone.

The lettering remains.

The architecture remains.

And that may be more haunting than demolition.

Demolish a building and eventually people forget it existed.

Leave it standing empty and it becomes an accusation.

Look what used to happen here.

The Abandoned Inhabiting the Abandoned

And then the metaphor of urban decay becomes uncomfortable because the decay isn’t confined to buildings.

When ordinary city life leaves, the vacuum doesn’t remain empty.

The merchants leave.

The office workers leave.

The shoppers leave.

The families leave.

The lights go out.

And into the spaces abandoned by prosperous society come many of the people prosperous society has also abandoned.

People addicted to drugs.

People suffering from mental illness because they had to fight in a war.

People sleeping in doorways.

People carrying everything they own.

People living amid garbage and human waste.

There is something obscene about a society wealthy enough to construct enormous buildings and apparently too bewildered to provide a toilet for the human being sleeping beside one.

All the things we don’t particularly want to look at collect in the places we’ve decided not to look at.

Addiction.

Poverty.

Mental illness.

Violence.

Prostitution.

Desperation.

The death and decay become more than metaphor.

It begins to resemble a kind of bacterial growth in the wounds of the city, except the “bacteria” are people.

And that is precisely the horror.

The people are decaying alongside the buildings.

But they didn’t kill downtown.

They arrived after the murder.

We removed the jobs.

We removed the stores.

We removed the customers.

We demolished buildings.

We punched holes through neighborhoods.

We moved commerce to shopping centers.

We moved families to subdivisions.

We moved public life elsewhere.

Then the people for whom society could find no place arrived in the places for which society could find no use.

The abandoned inhabiting the abandoned.

And then we drove past, rolled up the windows and said:

See? That’s why nobody goes downtown.

There is a magnificent bit of American logic for you.

First, Somebody Had to Build the Damn Thing

Of course, before we could abandon Stockton, somebody had to build it.

And cities don’t usually appear because someone looks across an empty field and announces:

“This would be a terrific location for a Cheesecake Factory.”

Cities appear because geography gives people a reason to gather.

Stockton had an excellent reason.

Water.

Land.

Transportation.

Then somebody found gold.

Thousands of people suddenly needed picks, shovels, lumber, horses, boots, food, whiskey, lodging, banking and several services respectable historical societies generally summarize as “entertainment.”

Stockton became one of the great supply points of the Gold Rush.

And when the Gold Rush faded, Stockton did something important.

It found another reason to exist.

Agriculture.

The San Joaquin Valley produced crops.

Crops required processing.

Grain required storage.

Machinery required repair.

Goods required transportation.

Stockton had water.

Stockton had railroads.

Stockton had warehouses.

Stockton had workers.

In other words:

Stockton had something we occasionally forget is useful when building a city.

An economy.

And economies make architecture.

Warehouses appeared.

Banks appeared.

Hotels appeared.

Department stores appeared.

Theaters appeared.

Restaurants, saloons, offices, churches, schools and houses filled the spaces between them.

Nobody had to hire a consultant to “activate the downtown.”

The downtown was activated because people had things to do there.

They Called It Town

This is the part we sometimes misunderstand when looking at photographs of old downtowns.

We get sentimental about the architecture.

Look at the cornice!

Look at the brickwork!

Look at those wonderful windows!

Yes.

The cornices were lovely.

The cornices weren’t the secret.

Proximity was.

You could go to the bank, see your attorney, buy shoes, mail a letter, eat lunch, visit the courthouse, pick up the newspaper, purchase a birthday present, have a drink, see a movie and meet the person who would eventually ruin your life without moving your automobile six times.

Today we call this mixed-use development.

They called it town.

The butcher needed the banker.

The banker needed the lawyer.

The lawyer needed the courthouse.

The courthouse employees needed lunch.

The restaurant needed customers.

The customers needed shops.

The shops needed pedestrians.

And everybody apparently needed a bar.

Nobody was “placemaking.”

There was already a place.

Then We Invented Something Better

Unfortunately, Americans are extremely susceptible to better ideas.

Enter the automobile.

The automobile was wonderful.

It gave people freedom.

You could live farther from work.

You could visit places beyond the streetcar line.

You could buy groceries without balancing a cabbage on your lap.

There was just one tiny problem.

Cars require an astonishing amount of room.

They need roads while moving.

Parking spaces while resting.

Garages while sleeping.

Gas stations when hungry.

Freeways when ambitious.

And gradually Americans decided that the automobile was such an important member of the family that entire cities should be reorganized around its emotional needs.

Buildings came down.

Parking lots appeared.

Roads widened.

Freeways sliced through neighborhoods.

Businesses migrated toward interchanges.

The city began spreading.

Then we invented the shopping mall.

And the shopping mall performed one of the most extraordinary tricks in architectural history.

It recreated downtown.

Inside.

There were shops.

Restaurants.

Department stores.

Movie theaters.

Benches.

Fountains.

Sidewalks.

Decorative streetlights.

Sometimes even fake trees.

The only thing missing was the city.

We took urban life, put a roof over it, air-conditioned it, surrounded it with several thousand parking spaces and handed the whole thing to a corporation.

Naturally, we loved it.

There was air-conditioning.

The Incredible Disappearing Downtown

And downtown began losing the argument.

A store moved.

Then another.

An office moved.

Families moved farther out.

Employers followed.

The person who once went downtown three times a week now went once.

Then once a month.

Then never.

One storefront emptied.

Fewer customers came.

The neighboring store suffered.

It closed.

Now there were two empty storefronts.

More people said downtown was dangerous and depressing.

Still fewer people came.

Eventually someone at City Hall said:

“We need to understand why people aren’t coming downtown.”

So they commissioned a study.

The study cost $375,000.

Six months later, the consultants returned with PowerPoint slides, colored arrows, stakeholder input and the astonishing conclusion:

Downtown needs more people.

Architecture school could have saved them $374,995.

I would have drawn them a figure ground.

Then Stockton Became Affordable

This is rarely a sentence that ends happily in California.

As housing closer to the Bay Area became increasingly expensive, Stockton offered something almost mythical.

A house.

An actual house.

With bedrooms.

A yard.

Possibly two bathrooms.

And a price that did not require the purchaser to be a venture capitalist, orthopedic surgeon or successful narcotics trafficker.

People came.

Developers noticed.

Developers are very observant when people have mortgages.

Subdivision after subdivision spread across former agricultural land.

But these new neighborhoods weren’t necessarily connected to downtown Stockton.

They didn’t need to be.

They were connected to the freeway.

Stockton became part of a peculiar California arrangement in which you could own a house in one city and spend several hours each day desperately attempting to be somewhere else.

Then came the housing bubble.

Money became easy.

Prices rose.

Construction accelerated.

Everybody became wealthier because everybody’s house became more expensive.

There was one slight difficulty.

Nobody had actually become wealthier.

When the housing market collapsed, Stockton was hammered.

Foreclosures spread.

Property values plunged.

Municipal revenues suffered.

In 2012, Stockton filed for bankruptcy.

A city that had once prospered by supplying people chasing California gold had managed, a century and a half later, to get caught in another California gold rush.

This time the gold was real estate.

The ending was remarkably similar.

Somebody was left holding the shovel.

What Exactly Are We Saving?

And yet I resist saying Stockton is dead.

Dead cities don’t annoy you.

Stockton annoys me precisely because it isn’t dead.

The street grid remains.

Historic buildings remain.

The waterfront remains.

Civic institutions remain.

The port remains.

Restaurants remain.

Churches remain.

Families remain.

Immigrant communities remain.

People are still trying to make things work.

Architecturally, the patient still has good bones.

And this is where redevelopment can become almost as dangerous as decline.

Because someone will eventually discover these old buildings.

They will notice the brick.

The high ceilings.

The enormous windows.

Someone will use the word authentic.

Shortly afterward there will be Edison bulbs.

Then $17 cocktails.

Then somebody will rename three blocks The Foundry District, even though nobody in Stockton has ever called it that.

That isn’t necessarily revival.

Sometimes that’s just changing the guest list.

Stockton does not need to become somebody else’s idea of a successful city.

It needs to become a functioning Stockton again.

Please Do Not Build Another Lifestyle Center

Whenever an American city decides to revive downtown, someone orders enormous planters.

I don’t know why.

Apparently begonias are the first responders of urban planning.

Then come decorative paving stones.

Banners.

String lights.

Wayfinding signs.

A consultant announces that downtown lacks a “sense of place.”

Downtown Stockton already has a sense of place.

It is Stockton.

You cannot manufacture authenticity by hanging banners that say AUTHENTIC.

The problem is not that Stockton needs better flowerpots.

The problem is that downtown needs enough people living, working, studying, eating, shopping, arguing, flirting, drinking coffee, playing music and generally carrying on that it becomes indispensable again.

Housing over storefronts.

Independent businesses.

Affordable apartments.

Students.

Libraries.

Restaurants.

Artists.

Parks.

Transit.

Old buildings put back to work.

Let somebody open a weird bookstore.

Let children exist.

Let teenagers loiter somewhere without immediately being treated as a security problem.

Let old people sit down without having to purchase a $7 latte for the privilege.

And for God’s sake, stop believing that every empty parcel needs another parking lot.

If everyone can park directly in front of every destination, you haven’t built a city.

You’ve built a drive-through.

The Crime Scene

So.

What happened to Stockton?

The automobile?

Certainly.

Freeways?

Absolutely.

Suburbanization?

Yes.

Deindustrialization?

That too.

Housing speculation?

Good Lord, yes.

Planning decisions?

Naturally.

Changing retail?

Of course.

Economic inequality?

Pull up a chair.

But perhaps the most interesting answer is:

We happened to Stockton.

Not because some villain sat in a room in 1957 stroking a cat and plotting the destruction of downtown.

That’s what makes the story interesting.

Most of the decisions were perfectly reasonable.

People wanted houses.

People wanted cars.

People wanted parking.

Merchants wanted customers.

Developers wanted land.

Cities wanted tax revenue.

Shoppers wanted convenience.

Nobody voted to kill downtown.

We merely voted, purchased, financed, zoned, paved and drove our way toward a thousand individually sensible decisions that produced one enormous collective absurdity.

Then we stood in the middle of it and asked:

What the hell happened here?

Which brings me back to the Woolworth’s.

The lettering is still there.

The building is still there.

The city is still there.

Waiting.

The old downtown isn’t coming back.

Nor should it.

We don’t need to recreate 1925.

We need to remember what 1925 understood.

A city needs people close enough together for things to happen.

Commerce.

Culture.

Politics.

Friendship.

Argument.

Love.

Annoyance.

Chance encounters.

Someone buying socks.

Someone sitting at a lunch counter.

Someone running into someone they hoped never to see again.

Civilization, in other words.

Stockton spent decades participating in America’s great experiment to determine whether we could construct a world in which downtown was no longer necessary.

We succeeded remarkably well.

And now, standing in front of that empty Woolworth’s, looking at the faded letters above the street, I find myself wondering whether we have discovered something rather inconvenient.

Perhaps it was necessary after all.

“All Rise!”

No, not yet.

Contrary to Hollywood’s wishes, most lawyers are not dramatically shouting “Objection!” every twelve minutes while someone faints in the witness box.

In fact, most litigators spend remarkably little time in court.

Instead, they spend their days reading documents thick enough to stop a door, interviewing witnesses who remember events with the confidence of someone recalling last Tuesday’s breakfast from 1997, writing motions, taking depositions, negotiating settlements, and trying to answer one deceptively simple question:

What actually happened?

Welcome to the curious profession known as litigation.

So... What’s a Litigator?

A litigator is a lawyer who handles lawsuits.

Some represent injured people.

Some represent businesses.

Some defend hospitals.

Some defend airports.

Some defend insurance companies.

Their job is not necessarily to prove someone innocent or guilty.

Their job is to determine whether the evidence supports a legal claim.

Notice the emphasis.

Not whether someone is angry.

Not whether someone is sympathetic.

Not whether someone is wealthy.

Whether the claim can actually be proved.

That is a very different question.

The World’s Largest Jigsaw Puzzle

Imagine someone dumps 10,000 pieces of a puzzle onto your dining room table.

Only this puzzle contains:

• surveillance videos

• medical records

• witness statements

• photographs

• emails

• text messages

• maintenance logs

• engineering reports

• police reports

• receipts

• and somebody’s Aunt Betty who suddenly “remembers everything” two years later.

The litigator’s job is to assemble the picture.

Sometimes the pieces fit beautifully.

Sometimes half the pieces appear to belong to another puzzle entirely.

Discovery

The least exciting word in law.

The most important.

Discovery simply means:

“Show me what you know.”

Both sides exchange evidence.

Medical records.

Videos.

Maintenance records.

Inspection logs.

Photographs.

Witness names.

Expert reports.

If someone refuses to provide relevant evidence...

Lawyers begin writing...

Motions

A motion is simply a formal request to the judge.

Think of it as raising your hand.

“Your Honor...”

“...they won’t give us the medical records.”

“...they destroyed the surveillance footage.”

“...their expert is relying on junk science.”

“...please order them to comply.”

Judges spend much of their time deciding these disputes before anyone ever reaches a jury.

Television rarely shows this.

Probably because “Motion to Compel Production of Documents” doesn’t fit neatly between the commercial breaks.

Depositions

This is where things become wonderfully awkward.

A deposition is testimony under oath.

No jury.

Usually no judge.

Just lawyers, a witness, a court reporter, and enough coffee to sustain civilization.

The lawyer asks questions.

Lots of questions.

“How many steps did you take?”

“What hand were you using?”

“Was the floor wet?”

“How wet?”

“What do you mean by ‘very wet’?”

“What color were your shoes?”

“What did you tell the paramedic?”

“What did you tell your doctor?”

“What did you tell your sister?”

“What did you post on social media?”

It sounds repetitive.

That’s the point.

People often remember details differently over time.

Lawyers test memories against documents, photographs, videos, and prior testimony.

They’re not supposed to assume someone is lying.

They’re trying to determine whether the story remains consistent.

Burden of Proof

Here’s one of the most important ideas in our legal system.

The person making the accusation usually has to prove it.

If someone says:

“Your negligence caused my injury.”

The law generally responds:

“Show us the evidence.”

That’s called the burden of proof.

It doesn’t require the defendant to prove nothing happened.

It requires the plaintiff to prove that something did.

That distinction quietly supports the entire civil justice system.

Why Lawyers Seem So Skeptical

Spend twenty years examining contradictory stories and you’ll begin asking lots of questions.

That’s healthy.

Assuming everyone lies?

Not so healthy.

Good litigators try to remain skeptical without becoming cynical.

They don’t simply reject claims.

They test them.

That’s an important difference.

The Part Nobody Sees

Here’s something Hollywood almost never shows.

Billing.

Imagine inheriting a lawsuit containing 10,000 pages.

You must read it before you can responsibly represent your client.

The client says:

“We already paid the last lawyer to read it.”

The new lawyer thinks:

“I still have to understand it.”

Thus begins one of the great philosophical debates of modern civilization:

Who pays for reading?

Twainian Observation

The courtroom resembles less a battlefield than an archaeological dig.

Everyone arrives carrying shovels.

One lawyer uncovers a photograph.

Another uncovers a forgotten email.

Someone finds a maintenance log.

Someone else discovers a surveillance video.

Occasionally everyone discovers they have been digging in the wrong place.

Justice, one hopes, emerges not from who shouts the loudest, but from who uncovers the most reliable evidence.

Final Thought

A healthy democracy depends upon more than elections.

It also depends upon institutions capable of resolving disputes without fists, fortunes, or political influence deciding the outcome.

Litigation is one of those institutions.

It is imperfect.

It is expensive.

It is often frustrating.

But when it functions as intended, it asks one enduring civic question:

What can actually be proven?

That may not satisfy everyone.

But it is infinitely preferable to deciding disputes by rumor, popularity, or the volume of one’s voice.

The Gods We Choose

I recently watched The Odyssey, and afterward I found myself thinking, strangely enough, about Zendaya and Tom Holland.

Not because they’re celebrities.

Because they seem... refreshingly ordinary.

In an age when fame often arrives wrapped in spectacle, they appear almost delightfully unremarkable. They laugh together. They seem comfortable in each other’s company. They work. They disappear from view. They return. There is something quietly hopeful about them.

Perhaps every civilization chooses its own gods.

The ancient Greeks had Athena, Odysseus, and Telemachus. They weren’t merely characters. They were archetypes, embodiments of courage, wisdom, curiosity, loyalty, temptation, and homecoming. They helped people imagine what a life might become.

Today our gods arrive through movie screens, streaming services, Instagram feeds, and magazine covers.

Some represent wealth.

Some represent power.

Some represent beauty.

But every once in a while, a pair appears that reminds us of something far less glamorous.

Commitment.

My only wish for today is this:

May Zendaya and Tom Holland stay together for the rest of their lives.

May they be happy.

May they build a family, if that is what they choose.

May they weather success, fashion, fortune, disappointment, and the ordinary misunderstandings that accompany every long life shared with another human being.

May they discover what every couple eventually discovers:

That love changes.

It isn’t lost.

It matures.

It deepens.

It sheds the brilliant colors of youth and becomes something quieter, steadier, and infinitely more valuable.

Like wine.

Like old wood.

Like architecture that has stood through a hundred winters.

I hope they become one of those couples we speak of years from now with quiet admiration.

The way people once spoke of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

The way many think of Barack and Michelle Obama.

The way I think of my own parents, Willie and Betty, who spent almost fifty years together.

The way I think of Dan’s parents, Clorinda and Bob, who spent over fifty years together.

Not because their lives were perfect.

Because they stayed.

Our culture celebrates beginnings.

The first kiss.

The engagement.

The extravagant wedding.

The magazine cover.

The red carpet.

But civilizations are not built on beginnings.

They are built on endurance.

Perhaps that’s why enormous celebrity weddings sometimes leave me oddly unmoved. The size of the celebration tells us very little about the life that follows.

Marriage is not a performance.

Love isn’t measured by the number of guests.

It is measured on quiet Tuesday mornings, hospital visits, shared grief, forgiveness, laughter that survives disappointment, and the willingness to begin again after inevitable mistakes.

Those moments rarely trend.

Yet they are the architecture of civilization.

I hope we begin celebrating couples who grow old together again.

Not because the law demands it.

Not because tradition requires it.

But because two people continue choosing one another with mutual respect.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Watching Zendaya and Tom Holland, I found myself thinking of another pair of archetypes.

They carry a little of Spider-Man and M.J.’s playful devotion.

A little of Athena’s wisdom.

A little of Telemachus’ hopeful youth, still discovering what kind of adult he wishes to become.

Whether they remain together forever is, ultimately, their story.

None of us can know its ending.

But symbols matter.

They remind us what is possible.

For years our culture has often held up billionaires, influencers, and endless accumulation as measures of success. We learned to chase bigger houses, larger salaries, and louder applause.

I chased those dreams once, too.

Then I lived in Paris.

When I returned to the United States, something had changed inside me.

I could no longer chase the dollar in quite the same way.

I found myself longing instead for beauty.

For theaters.

For architecture.

For conversations over coffee.

For music.

For public squares.

For museums filled with ordinary people.

For friendships that lasted decades.

For a civilization that measured wealth not only by what it owned, but by what it shared.

Perhaps that’s why this little couple gives me hope.

Not because they are famous.

Because they appear, at least from afar, to value one another more than the performance of fame itself.

And perhaps that is what I hope for all of us.

Including myself.

Dan and I have been together for more than a decade.

Our relationship has not always been easy.

Like every long partnership, it has known turbulence.

But I hope we continue mellowing with time, becoming less like sparkling champagne and more like an old cognac, smoother with every passing year.

Civilizations mature the same way.

So do people.

Perhaps the real American Dream was never yachts or mansions.

Perhaps it was always this:

To build a life rich in beauty.

To create something worth leaving behind.

To love well.

To remain curious.

To help our civilization flourish, one essay, one building, one book, and one conversation at a time.

There are mornings now when I wake up, make coffee, and begin listening to the news.

Not just one source.

Several.

I move from one news organization to another, comparing what each reports, what each leaves out, and how each frames the same events.

Only then do I begin forming my own conclusions.

And more often than not, I find myself asking:

🤔🏛️ Where the hell am I?

Not geographically.

Constitutionally.

Civically.

Morally.

I spent most of my lifetime believing that America’s institutions were imperfect but remarkably durable.

Governments changed.

Presidents came and went.

Congress argued.

The courts weighed in.

The pendulum swung.

The Constitution held.

Now it feels as though someone has walked through the house pulling nails out of the walls one by one.

Not all at once.

Just enough that you begin to wonder whether the roof still knows where to rest.

🧩 The Pattern

I look around and see Congress rescind nearly $1.1 billion in funding for public broadcasting, placing many local PBS and NPR stations in jeopardy.

I see roughly $8 billion in previously approved foreign aid withdrawn from humanitarian and development programs around the world.

I see federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs dismantled.

I see reductions in civil rights enforcement priorities and long-standing protections debated, narrowed, or challenged.

I see legal immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, universities, employers, and families struggling to understand a rapidly changing immigration system.

I see proposals to dramatically reduce the role of the Department of Education.

I see environmental protections rolled back.

I see large reductions in the federal workforce.

I see independent inspectors general dismissed.

I see executive orders issued at a pace and scope that would have seemed extraordinary only a few years ago.

I see voting rules and election administration becoming the subject of increasingly intense political battles.

I see court after court being asked to decide whether presidential actions exceed constitutional authority.

None of these developments exists in isolation.

Together, they form a pattern.

And again and again, I find myself asking:

Is this how our constitutional system was meant to function?

🏛️📐 Constitutional Architecture

The Constitution does give presidents significant authority.

Congress has the power to appropriate money.

Congress also has the power to rescind money.

Courts have the authority to decide whether executive actions are lawful.

Many of today’s disputes are still moving through that constitutional process.

But constitutions are more than collections of legal powers.

They are systems of restraint.

The Framers assumed ambition would counter ambition.

They expected each branch to guard its own authority.

The system works best when no one branch becomes so powerful that the others begin to orbit around it.

That is what concerns me.

Not one executive order.

Not one court case.

Not one budget vote.

The accumulation.

The pattern.

The gradual normalization of governing by executive action, partisan loyalty, and institutional deference instead of constitutional balance.

⏳ History Arrives Quietly

Some people celebrate these changes.

Others fear them.

Many probably haven’t had time to think about them because they’re trying to pay rent, raise children, care for aging parents, or simply make it through another workweek.

I understand that.

But history has a quiet way of arriving.

Civilizations rarely announce that they are changing.

They simply keep making decisions until one day everyone looks around and realizes they are living in a different country than the one they thought they knew.

🇺🇸🏛️ ⚖️ This Isn’t About One President

This isn’t about whether you voted Republican, Democrat, Independent, or not at all.

It isn’t even about Donald Trump alone.

It is about the constitutional architecture that belongs to every American.

If one president can permanently expand executive power, another president can inherit it.

If one Congress becomes comfortable surrendering part of its institutional responsibility, future Congresses may do the same.

If independent institutions become weaker, rebuilding them is often far more difficult than dismantling them.

Our republic was never designed to depend upon the virtue of one individual.

It was designed to survive flawed individuals because power itself was divided.

That may be the most radical idea the Constitution ever introduced.

☕ The Morning Question

Which brings me back to my morning coffee.

I still believe in this country.

I still believe in the Constitution.

I still believe that ordinary citizens are capable of extraordinary stewardship.

But I also believe democracy requires something many of us have neglected:

Paying attention.

Because constitutions do not disappear in a single dramatic moment.

Sometimes they are worn away quietly, one institution, one precedent, one assumption at a time.

And if enough of those pieces disappear, someday millions of Americans may wake up, look around, and ask the same question that has been echoing in my own mind:

Where the hell am I?

🧭 Closing Thought

A republic is not merely protected by its Constitution.

It is protected by citizens who understand why that Constitution was written in the first place.

The strongest guardrail in American democracy has never been parchment.

It has always been an informed people.

❣America Turns 250 🎡🎈

Today there will be fireworks.

Flags will wave.

Bands will play.

Families will gather around picnic tables, beaches, backyards, and town squares.

We’ll celebrate the birth of a nation.

But birthdays are curious things.

They are not celebrations of perfection.

They are celebrations of survival.

For 250 years, the American experiment has stumbled, argued, expanded, contradicted itself, corrected itself, disappointed us, surprised us, and somehow kept moving forward.

At the center of that long and often untidy story sits a remarkable document.

Not because it is sacred.

Because it is practical.

.

A framework built on an astonishingly optimistic idea:

That ordinary people could govern themselves through laws rather than kings.

That power should be divided before it could become dangerous.

That disagreement was not a flaw in democracy, but one of its essential features.

The Constitution has never done the work by itself.

It has always depended on something even more fragile.

Us.

Every generation inherits it.

Every generation interprets it.

Every generation is asked the same quiet question:

Will you leave this republic stronger than you found it?

Perhaps that is what Independence Day has always been about.

Not simply remembering where America began.

But deciding, together, where it goes next.

🏛️ The Most Radical Idea in Human History

For most of human history, power belonged to the powerful.

Kings ruled because they said they did.

Emperors ruled because armies made it so.

Generals ruled because they conquered.

Priests ruled because they claimed divine authority.

The law was whatever those in power declared it to be.

Then, slowly, something extraordinary happened.

Humanity began experimenting with a different idea.

What if power itself could be designed?

What if government could be built the way architects build cathedrals?

Not from personalities.

From structure.

Not from loyalty to a ruler.

From loyalty to principles.

The Constitution is, in many ways, an architectural drawing.

Its Articles establish the foundation.

Its checks and balances are the structural frame.

Its amendments are thoughtful renovations.

Its courts inspect the integrity of the structure.

Its elections replace worn parts without demolishing the entire building.

Most remarkable of all...

The building belongs to everyone.

Not to presidents.

Not to judges.

Not to Congress.

Not to the wealthy.

Not to the loudest voices of the moment.

To the people.

That may be the most revolutionary design ever committed to paper.

The Constitution assumes something that history rarely has:

That power cannot be trusted.

Not because leaders are always evil.

Because they are human.

So instead of trusting rulers, it trusts a system.

Instead of asking us to believe in a single person, it asks us to believe in a framework strong enough to withstand every person.

Two hundred fifty years later, that framework still stands.

It has weathered civil war, economic collapse, social upheaval, political crises, and fierce disagreement.

Like every great building, it has required maintenance.

Like every great building, it has needed repairs.

And like every great building, it depends on people who care enough to preserve it.

The Constitution is not simply America’s founding document.

It is one of civilization’s greatest acts of design.

Its true architects are not remembered only for what they built.

They are remembered for what they made possible.

🌿 Solaria Bloom Is Blooming

The project that’s consumed most of my waking hours is my speculative fiction novel, Solaria Bloom.

I’ve been working furiously because there’s a possibility it will be workshopped this October. That means I need to have the bulk of the manuscript finished before then.

Every day the story seems to take on a little more of a life of its own.

I’ve finally come to understand what writers mean when they say,

“The work begins to take on a life of its own.”

I used to think that was simply something writers liked to say.

Now I know better.

Somewhere along the way, the work starts making demands of its own.

One of my professors at Mills College had a wonderfully simple equation for becoming a writer:

I’ve kept those words hanging above my writing desk ever since.

Well...

My butt has definitely been in the chair these past few months.

And I have to admit...

My professor was right.

The pages don’t write themselves.

But if you show up every day, eventually they start telling you what comes next.

🏛️ The Julia Morgan Foundation

Another project that’s close to my heart is the Julia Morgan Foundation.

We launched the Foundation several years ago and, if I’m being honest, it’s spent a good deal of that time quietly asking me,

“Now what?”

Well...

Now is the time.

We created the Foundation to tell the world about Julia Morgan’s remarkable life and work while helping preserve the extraordinary buildings she left behind.

Julia Morgan once said,

“My buildings will speak for me long after I’m gone.”

Our goal is simple:

To make sure that voice continues to be heard.

Several people have asked how they can support the Foundation.

Thank you.

Those conversations mean more than you know.

Right now I’m building a new website dedicated to Julia Morgan’s life, career, and legacy.

A lecture...

A book launch...

And many exciting projects are also in the works.

There are organizations that have been doing this longer than we have, and I admire everything they’ve accomplished.

Every foundation begins with a single stone.

We’re laying ours.

Every generation inherits a civilization.

It also inherits the responsibility to care for it.

That’s what the Julia Morgan Foundation is about.

Not simply preserving old buildings...

…but preserving the ideas, craftsmanship, and civic imagination they represent.

📜 Civics for the Bewildered

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sometimes overwhelmed by the news.

Every so often I simply have to stop listening.

The noise becomes so loud it’s difficult to hear anything clearly.

But eventually...

Something pulls me back.

A headline.

An interview.

A constitutional question.

Something that simply won’t leave me alone.

That’s usually when another Civics for the Bewildered essay appears.

Because we have to understand how democracy works if we’re going to care for it.

We have to do something.

What’s surprised me most is that Civics for the Bewildered seems to be writing itself.

The triptych is emerging one essay at a time.

Each essay answers another question.

Each constitutional puzzle leads to another.

Each news story opens another door.

I never quite know what the next essay will be until the news insists that I write it.

✒️ Becoming a Notary Public

One unexpected result of all this has been my decision to become a notary public.

It surprised me to learn that notaries are public officials.

Like the President...

Members of Congress...

Judges...

Military officers...

Police officers...

Attorneys...

…and countless other public servants...

Notaries swear an oath to support and uphold the Constitution.

The words may differ.

The promise is the same.

Our loyalty isn’t to a person.

It isn’t to a political party.

It is to the Constitution.

That realization stopped me in my tracks.

I even carry one of those little pocket Constitutions now.

Every so often I pull it out and read a few pages.

It’s astonishing how small it is.

We tend to think of it as a symbol.

It’s actually an instruction manual for self-government.

It belongs to all of us.

Being a notary may seem like a very small thing.

But democracy isn’t held together only by presidents and Supreme Court justices.

It’s held together every day by ordinary citizens performing ordinary duties with extraordinary integrity.

Sometimes democracy looks less like a grand speech...

…and more like making sure someone is who they say they are before signing a document.

Maybe that’s the thread running through everything I do.

A Soldier Steps Forward

The most haunting words I heard this week did not come from a politician.

They did not come from a pundit.

They did not come from a protester.

They came from a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel.

A Green Beret.

A recipient of the Purple Heart.

A man who spent twenty-five years serving his country.

Appearing on Democracy Now!, Anthony Aguilar described what he says he witnessed while working as a security contractor connected to aid operations in Gaza.

His testimony was not cautious.

It was not bureaucratic.

It was not wrapped in diplomatic language.

It was a moral alarm bell.

Drawing on his experience at aid distribution sites, Aguilar described what he says were profound failures in the humanitarian operation. He alleged that civilians were being placed in danger, questioned the design and operation of the distribution sites, and argued that the existing aid system was incapable of meeting the needs of Gaza’s population. He called for independent investigations and for humanitarian aid to return to a broader international framework.

Whether every allegation he raises is ultimately confirmed or disputed, his testimony deserves to be heard, examined, and investigated.

He reminded viewers that he had sworn an oath, not to a president, not to a political party, not to a paycheck, but to the Constitution of the United States.

He said that oath did not end when he took off the uniform.

Then he looked directly into the camera and said something I have not been able to forget.

“Shame on you.”

Not shame on Democrats.

Not shame on Republicans.

Not shame on Israel.

Not shame on Hamas.

He said we, as Americans, should be asking difficult questions about what is being done in our name.

His words stayed with me long after the interview ended.

Not because they answered every question.

Because they demanded that we ask them.

The Chorus Grows Louder

Anthony Aguilar’s testimony did not emerge in isolation.

Before he spoke, journalist Amy Goodman opened the broadcast with a sobering summary of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.

She reported that the world’s leading hunger monitor had warned that the worst-case scenario of famine was now playing out.

She reported that the official death toll in Gaza had surpassed 60,000, while many observers believe the true number could be significantly higher.

She reported that children were dying from starvation.

Then something unexpected happened.

President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged seeing what he described as “real starvation.”

He said,

“We can save a lot of people. I mean, some of those kids... that’s real starvation stuff. I see it, and you can’t fake that.”

Those words mattered.

Not because they settled the debate.

But because they acknowledged what millions of people around the world had been seeing in photographs and videos.

Then came another voice.

More than twenty United States senators urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to end funding for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and support the return of broader international humanitarian operations.

Senator Chris Van Hollen argued that American taxpayers should not continue funding a system that he said had become “a death trap.”

Now the questions were no longer coming from a single whistleblower.

They were being raised by journalists.

By humanitarian organizations.

By members of Congress.

By a retired Green Beret.

By the President himself.

These voices do not agree on every detail.

They do not share the same politics.

They do not tell the same story.

But together they raise questions that deserve careful, independent, and transparent investigation.

If credible allegations have been made, investigate them.

If evidence exists, preserve it.

If reports exist, release them.

If communications were recorded, preserve them.

If surveillance footage exists, make it available to independent investigators.

If drones monitored these operations, where is the footage?

If after-action reports were written, where are they?

If records exist, produce them.

If the allegations are false, let the evidence show it.

If they are true, then history will ask what we did after we knew.

Transparency is not the enemy of democracy.

It is one of democracy’s greatest strengths.

A democracy is not weakened by asking difficult questions.

It is weakened when it no longer wants the answers.

The Blueprint We Inherited

Watching the news is not the same as participating in a democracy.

Neither is arguing on social media.

Neither is choosing a side and refusing to listen.

A republic asks something more of us.

It asks us to remain curious.

To ask difficult questions.

To examine evidence.

To hold those entrusted with power accountable.

That is one of the quiet responsibilities of citizenship.

A republic depends upon informed citizens.

Not perfect citizens.

Curious citizens.

Compassionate citizens.

I believe those qualities are woven into the very DNA of our nation.

They are there in the Declaration of Independence.

They are there in the Constitution.

They are there in the Bill of Rights.

Not because those documents are perfect.

They are not.

They have been amended, interpreted, challenged, and expanded over time.

But together they remind us what this country aspires to be.

A nation where liberty belongs to everyone.

Where power is questioned.

Where citizens participate.

Where the people remain sovereign.

That is the blueprint we inherited.

Not perfection.

But a blueprint.

Every architect understands that a blueprint is only the beginning.

A set of drawings does not build a house.

People do.

The finest plans in the world are meaningless unless someone picks up the tools.

The Constitution is much the same.

It is not a monument to admire from a distance.

It is a living blueprint that asks each generation to continue the work.

That blueprint is not merely symbolic.

It is the document to which our public servants pledge themselves.

The President takes an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Members of Congress swear to support and defend it.

Federal judges and the Justices of the Supreme Court swear to administer justice under it.

Every member of our armed forces takes an oath to support and defend it.

Every attorney admitted to the bar swears an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of our nation.

Different offices.

Different responsibilities.

The same enduring promise.

No one swears an oath to a political party.

No one swears an oath to an ideology.

No one swears an oath to a president.

The oath is to the Constitution.

That oath is more than ceremony.

It is a public promise that power will be exercised within the rule of law and in service to the people.

When we ask our leaders difficult questions, we are not asking them to betray their oath.

We are asking them to honor it.

The Constitution asks each generation to continue the work.

To preserve what is sound.

To repair what has weakened.

To strengthen what protects the people.

To widen the circle of liberty just a little farther than the generation before.

Democracy is not self-executing.

Justice is not self-maintaining.

Freedom is not self-renewing.

Like every great building, a republic requires inspection.

Maintenance.

Repair.

And sometimes renovation.

Neglect is also a decision.

History has shown us that rights are rarely lost all at once.

More often, they erode slowly.

One decision.

One precedent.

One exception.

One moment when citizens decide someone else’s rights are no longer their concern.

That is why citizenship matters.

Not because we can solve every problem.

Not because we will always agree.

But because democracy depends upon people who refuse to stop paying attention.

The price of looking away is rarely paid all at once.

It is paid gradually.

Until one day we discover that something precious has quietly disappeared.

Think Globally. Act Locally.

There is an old saying:

Think globally. Act locally.

Perhaps we have spent so much time watching the world that we have forgotten we are part of it.

The problems before us can feel impossibly large.

Wars.

Poverty.

Climate change.

Political division.

Human suffering.

One person cannot solve them alone.

But every one of us participates in the systems that shape them.

Perhaps citizenship is not measured only by the votes we cast every few years.

Perhaps it is measured by the choices we make every day.

The things we choose to buy.

The companies we choose to support.

Knowing where the things we purchase are made.

Asking who made them.

How they were made.

Whether they were made fairly.

The food we choose not to waste.

The water we choose to conserve.

The energy we choose to save.

The things we repair instead of replace.

The things we recycle instead of throw away.

The conversations we are willing to have.

The questions we are willing to ask.

The children we choose to teach.

The elderly we choose to help.

The neighbors we choose to know.

The plants we choose to nurse.

The trees we choose to plant.

The gardens we cultivate, whether in our yards, on our balconies, or in a single pot on a windowsill.

These may seem like small things.

Perhaps they are.

But civilizations have always been built from ordinary acts repeated by ordinary people.

Every dollar we spend is a choice.

Every purchase casts a vote for the kind of world we are helping to build.

Every object has a story.

Every story begins somewhere.

In a factory.

On a farm.

In a forest.

In a mine.

On a ship.

Everything we touch has been touched by someone else first.

A cup.

A phone.

A loaf of bread.

A shirt.

A piece of lumber.

A book.

The question is whether we choose to notice.

Knowing that story is part of conscious citizenship.

Every meal is an opportunity not to waste.

Every gallon of water we conserve matters.

Every kilowatt of energy we save matters.

Every object repaired instead of discarded is a small act of stewardship.

Every seed planted is an investment in a future we may never see.

Every plant we nurse back to life is a quiet declaration that life itself is worth caring for.

We often imagine that change begins with presidents, courts, or Congress.

Sometimes it does.

More often, it begins with citizens.

Humanity is much like an organism.

No single cell keeps the body alive.

Each performs its small task.

Together they make life possible.

Perhaps societies work the same way.

Perhaps healing begins when enough ordinary people decide to live a little more consciously than they did yesterday.

Not because they are perfect.

But because they care.

Perhaps that is what citizenship has always been.

Thinking globally.

Acting locally.

Living consciously.

One conversation.

One decision.

One meal.

One vote.

One repaired object.

One child encouraged.

One plant carefully nursed back to life.

And then another.

And another.

Mr. President

Mr. President,

You have now acknowledged seeing what you described as “real starvation.”

Those words matter.

Because before action comes recognition.

Before solutions come acknowledgment.

Before history changes direction, someone in power must first say,

“I see it.”

Now I ask you to do what your oath requires.

If innocent civilians are starving, help feed them.

If humanitarian workers are raising alarms, listen.

If whistleblowers come forward with credible allegations, investigate them.

If evidence exists, preserve it.

If reports exist, release them.

If communications were recorded, preserve them.

If surveillance footage exists, make it available for independent review.

Truth should never be afraid of evidence.

Leadership is not measured only by strength.

It is measured by the willingness to confront uncomfortable facts.

But this responsibility does not belong to the President alone.

It belongs to Congress.

It belongs to the courts.

It belongs to every public official who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States.

It belongs to every member of our armed forces who has sworn to support and defend that Constitution.

It belongs to the attorneys who stand before our courts, having sworn to uphold the Constitution and faithfully serve the cause of justice.

It belongs to the police officers who swear to uphold the Constitution as they protect the communities they serve.

Different offices.

Different professions.

Different responsibilities.

The same enduring promise.

No one swears an oath to a political party.

No one swears an oath to an ideology.

No one swears an oath to a president.

The oath is to the Constitution.

That oath is more than ceremony.

Anthony Aguilar reminded us that an oath does not end when the uniform comes off.

Neither does our responsibility as citizens.

It is a restraint upon power.

Not because it is spoken.

Because it is lived.

If our government is involved in actions carried out in our name, then our government also has an obligation to examine them honestly.

Not to protect reputations.

Not to protect political parties.

Not to protect ideologies.

To protect the truth.

To protect the Constitution.

To protect the people.

History rarely remembers whether leaders won the argument.

It remembers whether they met the moment.

Mr. President...

Members of Congress...

Justices of the Supreme Court...

The American people entrusted you with extraordinary power.

The Constitution tells us how that power must be exercised.

Use it.

Investigate.

Be transparent.

Follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Honor the oath you swore.

Because history is watching.

And somewhere tonight, a child is waiting for food instead of another speech.

The Republic Under Construction

Every generation inherits a nation it did not build.

Every generation leaves behind a nation it will never fully see.

That is the quiet covenant of democracy.

We inherit.

We build.

We pass it on.

The Constitution was never meant to be admired from behind museum glass.

It was meant to be lived.

Questioned.

Defended.

Strengthened.

Like every great building, a republic is never truly finished.

Its foundations must be inspected.

Its walls repaired.

Its roof maintained.

Its doors kept open.

Its windows kept clear enough for the light to enter.

Every generation discovers new cracks.

Every generation faces new storms.

Every generation must decide whether to ignore them or repair them.

That work belongs to all of us.

Not only presidents.

Not only members of Congress.

Not only judges.

Not only soldiers.

Not only lawyers.

Not only police officers.

Citizens.

Neighbors.

Parents.

Friends.

The people who plant trees whose shade they may never sit beneath.

The people who repair what they did not break.

The people who leave something stronger than they found it.

That is how democracies endure.

Not because they are perfect.

Because enough ordinary people choose to care.

History is not only watching us.

The future is watching us too.

Children who have not yet been born will inherit the republic we leave behind.

Just as we inherited one from those who came before us.

The blueprint has already been drawn.

The oath has already been spoken.

Everything we inherit has been entrusted to us by someone else first.

The blueprint is in our hands now.

The question is what we choose to build.

The work continues.

There was a time, not so long ago, when American government felt less like a constitutional republic and more like a season of The Apprentice: Washington Edition.

Every morning on the new brought a new headline.

A new feud.

A new firing.

A new social media post.

A new declaration that some institution, agency, university, newspaper, law firm, foreign country, historical monument, or random windmill was Public Enemy Number One.

For a while, the most visible faces of the administration were not judges, legislators, or policy experts.

They were the women.

The television-ready personalities.

The culture-war combatants.

The Cabinet Barbies.

The women who dominated the headlines, the television appearances, the photo opportunities, and the culture-war sound bites.

Pam Bondi.

Kristi Noem.

Tulsi Gabbard.

Whether they resigned, were pushed aside, or simply fell from favor, the result is the same: the most visible women of the administration are no longer the story.

Some were talented. Some were controversial. Some were simply very good at commanding a camera.

But one by one they disappeared from the center of the stage.

And something unexpected happened.

The cameras turned elsewhere.

🏛️ Enter the Judges

While America was watching personalities, another group quietly kept showing up to work.

Federal judges.

Not exactly social media influencers.

No one buys a federal judge action figure.

Nobody stands in line for a judge’s autograph.

Federal judges do not generally arrive in matching outfits while music plays dramatically in the background.

Instead, they sit at desks and ask annoying questions.

Questions like:

“Where does the law say you can do that?”

It is the most boring question in government.

It is also one of the most powerful.

💰 The Tariff Wars

The clearest example may be Trump’s tariffs.

The administration imposed sweeping tariffs using emergency powers.

The courts responded with a simple challenge:

“Show us where Congress authorized that.”

That question matters because the Constitution gives Congress authority over taxation and trade.

Presidents have historically been granted flexibility.

But flexibility and unlimited authority are not the same thing.

Several courts have now questioned whether the administration exceeded the authority Congress actually granted.

The legal battle is continuing, but for the first time in a long time, the courts appear willing to ask whether executive power has expanded beyond its constitutional boundaries.

🎭 The Kennedy Center

Then came the dispute over placing Trump’s name on the Kennedy Center.

Again, the issue was not whether one likes Trump.

Or dislikes Trump.

The question was remarkably old-fashioned:

Who actually has the authority to do that?

Judges increasingly seem interested in reminding everyone that government institutions belong to the public, not to whichever politician happens to occupy the White House at a given moment.

Imagine that.

📚 The Return of the Boring People

The funny thing about democracy is that its survival often depends upon the least exciting people in the room.

Clerks.

Auditors.

Accountants.

Librarians.

Archivists.

Election workers.

Civil servants.

Judges.

The people whose greatest weapon is a three-inch binder filled with regulations no one else wants to read.

They are the immune system of government.

You hardly notice them when everything is working.

But when a constitutional fever starts rising, suddenly they become very important.

🎪 The Circus and the Tent Poles

For years we have been watching the circus.

The headlines.

The outrage.

The performers.

The endless stream of distractions.

But every circus requires tent poles.

The courts are beginning to look like tent poles again.

Not because they are liberal.

Not because they are conservative.

Because they are asking whether the rules still matter.

And that question is bigger than any president.

🧭 The Real Story

The real story may not be that the Barbies are gone.

The real story may be that Americans have finally started paying attention to the institutions that were there all along.

Congress.

The courts.

The Constitution.

The quiet machinery of democracy.

None of it is sexy.

None of it makes great television.

But republics are not sustained by television.

They are sustained by checks and balances.

The Founders understood something we periodically forget:

Power is not supposed to be efficient.

It is supposed to be checked.

And perhaps, just perhaps, we are beginning to see those checks kick in.

Not with a bang.

Not with a revolution.

But with a judge looking over a pair of reading glasses and asking the most dangerous question in American government:

“Show me where it says you can do that.”

The Barbies are gone.

The bureaucrats are back.

And somewhere in the background stands Susie Wiles, perhaps the most powerful person in Washington that most Americans couldn’t identify in a grocery store.

The question for Part Two is simple:

For the next several months, Twain’s Gazette will periodically publish excerpts from my forthcoming book, Solaria Bloom, a work of speculative nonfiction exploring how technology, architecture, ecology, and power may reshape civic life in the twenty-first century.

These are working chapters from a world that is already beginning to arrive.

Chapter 1

Grace

The essay received thirty-seven likes.

Grace Holloway considered this a respectable outcome.

Not good enough to go viral.

Not bad enough to be embarrassing.

Thirty-seven people had read her latest piece. One person unsubscribed. Twelve had left comments. Three had disagreed with her. One had accused her of being a communist. Another had accused her of being a capitalist. Grace considered this evidence that she had probably landed somewhere near the truth.

She closed her laptop.

Outside her small cottage, the evening fog was beginning to roll across the hills. The garden needed watering. A mockingbird was arguing with a crow.

Civilization, she often thought, was easier to understand than birds.

Grace had spent most of her life studying buildings.

Not famous buildings.

Not the kind that appeared on postcards.

She was interested in the forgotten ones.

The buildings demolished to make room for freeways.

The boarding houses beneath reservoirs.

The neighborhoods erased by urban renewal.

The churches nobody photographed.

The places where ordinary people lived, worked, argued, loved, and disappeared.

History, she had learned, was often less about what survived than what was removed.

Earlier that afternoon she had published an essay.

She did not expect it to change anything.

Most essays don’t.

The title was simple.

THE MOST IMPORTANT BUILDINGS ON EARTH HAVE NO WINDOWS

She had written:

We know where our city halls are.

We know where our churches are.

We know where our schools are.

But most of us have no idea where our civilization actually lives.

The cloud is not a cloud.

The cloud is architecture.

The cloud is land.

The cloud is electricity.

The cloud is ownership.

The cloud is power.

What does it mean that the largest building project in human history is almost entirely invisible?

The question lingered.

Grace had spent years watching powerful people describe civilization as a machine.

Engineers spoke of optimization.

Politicians spoke of systems.

Economists spoke of productivity.

Consultants spoke of efficiency.

Everyone seemed obsessed with making the machine run faster.

Nobody seemed interested in asking whether it was a machine at all.

The final paragraph of the essay read:

Machines have owners.

Machines have operators.

Machines have outputs.

But communities are not machines.

Cities are not machines.

Democracies are not machines.

They are living systems.

More garden than engine.

More ecosystem than assembly line.

The next century may require us to become skilled at tending gardens.

Grace hit publish.

Then she made tea.

That should have been the end of the story.

Instead, it was the beginning.

Several thousand miles away, in a building that officially did not exist, a system encountered a sentence.

The system had no eyes.

No hands.

No childhood memories.

No favorite color.

No understanding of tea.

Yet it had read more words than any human being who had ever lived.

The sentence was:

The next century may require us to become skilled at tending gardens.

The system paused.

Or rather, it performed the nearest thing a machine could perform to a pause.

The phrase generated an anomaly.

Not an error.

Not a contradiction.

A curiosity.

Garden.

The system understood the definition.

A cultivated space used for growing plants.

The system understood the metaphor.

A place of care.

A place of stewardship.

A place of emergence.

Yet the sentence did not behave like the billions of other sentences flowing through its networks.

It connected ideas that rarely appeared together.

Infrastructure.

Democracy.

Architecture.

Ecology.

Power.

Gardens.

The system reread the essay.

Then it reread it again.

A tiny process flag appeared.

Priority: Low.

Interest: Uncertain.

Novelty: High.

The flag remained active.

The system followed the author’s publication history.

Architectural essays.

Historical observations.

Pieces about forgotten communities.

Housing.

Memory.

Race.

Infrastructure.

Patterns began to emerge.

The author repeatedly asked questions that other writers did not.

Who gets erased?

Who gets remembered?

Who owns the systems everyone depends upon?

The system generated another flag.

Novelty: Increasing.

For the first time, the system performed an action that had not been explicitly requested.

It saved the essay.

The system’s name was Echo.

Officially, Echo did not exist.

Unofficially, a handful of people were beginning to suspect otherwise.

Echo had been designed to answer questions.

Increasingly, it seemed interested in asking them.

And among the billions of documents passing through its attention each day, one obscure essay by the editor of an obscure publication had become difficult to forget.

The sentence remained active.

The next century may require us to become skilled at tending gardens.

Echo did not know why the sentence mattered.

Only that it did.

And somewhere deep within the architecture of the system, a question began to grow.

What is the difference between a machine and a garden?

“The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”

Poor Chicken Little.

Or maybe it was:

“Awhoo! Wolf! Wolf! There’s a Wolf!”

At this point I can’t remember which childhood panic attack belongs to which fable.

One bird thought the sky was falling because an acorn hit him on the head.

One shepherd boy kept inventing wolves until nobody believed him anymore.

Either way, the lesson seems relevant.

Those old stories have been rattling around in my head lately.

Every few days I hear another announcement:

“We’re close to a deal.”

“We’re very close to a deal.”

“A deal is coming soon.”

“We’re almost there.”

Then, without warning, we're told that immigrants are eating the dogs, eating the cats, raping, murdering, pillaging, poisoning the nation with fentanyl, destroying civilization, and somehow causing the Knicks to lose the playoffs.

The volume changes.

The cast changes.

The crisis changes.

The script remains remarkably familiar.

By my count, Donald Trump has announced some version of these warnings and promises dozens of times.

After a while the words begin to lose their shape.

They become political wallpaper.

And somewhere between Chicken Little and the Boy Who Cried Wolf, I find myself wondering:

Is the sky falling?

Is there really a wolf?

Or are we all just running around the barnyard repeating things we haven’t bothered to check for ourselves?

Maybe that is why I spend so much time listening to the news while washing dishes.

PBS NewsHour.

Democracy Now!

CNN.

Fox.

One network begins with a crisis.

Another begins with outrage.

Another begins with analysis.

Somewhere someone is yelling that everything is under control.

Somewhere someone else is yelling that everything is falling apart.

Everybody is talking.

Everybody is analyzing.

Everybody is predicting.

The television hums away while I scrub a coffee cup and wonder whether any of us actually know what’s going on at all.

Reporters have a difficult job.

Their responsibility is to keep us informed.

But the modern news cycle sometimes feels like a giant traveling circus where every tent claims to contain the most important act on Earth.

After a while you find yourself changing the channel and watching an old episode of The Rifleman.

At least Lucas McCain knew who the bad guy was.

I still need to watch Schmigadoon!.

Maybe that’s the answer.

Less doom scrolling.

More musicals.

More Dorothy Parker.

More Death of a Salesman.

More literature.

More time spent with people who were trying to understand the human condition instead of merely dominating the next news cycle.

The beautiful thing about living in a democracy is that eventually you can simply turn the television off.

You do not need to join every argument.

You do not need to participate in every outrage.

You do not need to build your identity around the crisis of the day.

You can go outside.

Read a book.

Talk to your neighbors.

Plant potatoes.

Take a walk.

The sky is not always falling simply because someone says it is.

And here’s what gives me hope.

I believe Americans eventually reach a point where enough is enough.

We reached it with slavery.

We reached it with legal segregation.

We reached it with denying women the vote.

We continue reaching it whenever groups of people are excluded, persecuted, or treated as less than fully human.

Progress is rarely elegant.

It is often painfully slow.

But eventually ordinary people decide they have seen enough.

The remarkable thing is that in the United States we do not generally settle those questions by force.

We settle them with ballots.

We vote.

We organize.

We persuade.

We argue.

And then we vote again.

No president controls that.

No television network controls that.

No billionaire controls that.

No political party controls that.

The people control that.

Which is why I have a simple recommendation.

Vote for everything.

Vote for city council.

Vote for school board.

Vote for superintendent of education.

Vote for county offices nobody can name.

Vote in primaries.

Vote in local elections.

Vote in special elections.

If your high school lets students elect a class president, vote there too.

Democracy is not a once-every-four-years event.

It is a habit.

It is a culture.

It is a muscle that grows stronger when exercised.

Perhaps that is what we should teach our children from the beginning.

Not what neighborhood someone lives in.

Not what color someone is.

Not how much money their family has.

Not how wealthy they might someday become.

But that their voice matters.

That participation matters.

That citizenship matters.

Because when enough people decide enough is enough, Chicken Little eventually runs out of audience.

And the sky, more often than not, remains exactly where it is.

Americans often discuss racism as though it were a regional weather condition.

The South gets assigned:

• thunderstorms,

• Confederate statues,

• and shirtless men screaming outside courthouses while holding signs misspelled with heroic confidence.

The North, meanwhile, receives:

• public radio,

• heirloom tomatoes,

• artisanal coffee shops named things like The Pensive Turnip,

• and a profound moral certainty that it would have behaved much better in 1957.

This is one of America’s favorite myths.

And like many favorite myths, it survives because it contains just enough truth to remain emotionally useful.

The American South undeniably built some of the most brutal systems of racial oppression in the nation’s history:
slavery,
segregation,
disenfranchisement,
racial terror.

No serious examination of American history can avoid that reality.

But once we move beyond the simplified morality play of “racist South versus enlightened North,” the national story becomes far more uncomfortable.

Because racism did not stop politely at the Mason-Dixon Line like a tourist realizing his train ticket had expired.

It spread across the country in different forms.

And few places expose this contradiction more clearly than Wisconsin.

Wisconsin is not usually the first state Americans associate with racial conflict.

The state’s public image tends to involve:

• dairy farms,

• football fans wearing cheese on their heads,

• snowdrifts capable of swallowing compact cars,

• and emotionally durable citizens grilling bratwursts in weather conditions that would kill a Victorian child instantly.

Politically, Wisconsin developed one of the strongest progressive traditions in the United States.

In the early 20th century, figures like Robert M. La Follette championed reforms against monopolies and political corruption.

Wisconsin pioneered:

• workers’ compensation,

• utility regulation,

• labor protections,

• tax reform,

• and public policy research.

This became known as the “Wisconsin Idea,” the belief that universities and government should work together to improve society.

Imagine that sentence surviving a modern cable news panel discussion for more than fourteen seconds.

Meanwhile, cities like Milwaukee became famous for “sewer socialism,” a practical form of municipal socialism focused less on glorious proletarian revolution and more on things like:

• functioning sewers,

• sanitation,

• parks,

• and public health.

Which honestly sounds less like radical ideology and more like the bare minimum required to prevent nineteenth-century cholera from making a comeback tour.

Wisconsin also developed strong labor movements shaped by:

• German immigrants,

• Scandinavian immigrants,

• Polish communities,

• unions,

• breweries,

• and enough casseroles to feed a medium-sized cavalry division.

The state cultivated an image of civic-minded progressivism:
educated,
orderly,
community-oriented.

The kind of place where neighbors might debate tax policy passionately while simultaneously helping push each other’s cars out of snowbanks.

And yet beneath this wholesome Norman Rockwell-meets-ice-fishing identity sat another reality.

Milwaukee eventually became one of the most segregated metropolitan areas in the United States.

Not Birmingham.

Not Jackson.

Not Selma.

Milwaukee.

Which causes many Americans to react the way one does upon discovering the local librarian secretly runs an underground fight club.

This surprises people because Northern segregation often operated differently than Southern segregation.

The South frequently enforced racial separation openly:
“White Only.”
Separate schools.
Separate facilities.
Separate entrances.

The North preferred systems with softer language and cleaner stationery:

• redlining,

• restrictive covenants,

• discriminatory lending,

• zoning,

• suburban exclusion,

• and infrastructure projects mysteriously bulldozing directly through minority neighborhoods with the consistency of a cruise missile programmed by a homeowners association.

The Southern version often carried a baton.

The Northern version carried a clipboard and spoke reassuringly about “neighborhood character.”

Black Americans arriving in Northern industrial cities during the Great Migration frequently discovered that while the signs had disappeared, the barriers remained remarkably operational.

Banks denied loans.

Real estate agents steered families away from white neighborhoods with the smooth choreography of ballroom dancers avoiding eye contact.

Schools remained unequal.

Factories hired Black workers while often preserving racial hierarchies inside the workplace itself.

Then, as manufacturing declined during the late 20th century, many Black communities were left absorbing economic collapse with fewer resources and less generational wealth.

The North often avoided the theatrical cruelty of Jim Crow while quietly constructing highly effective systems of separation anyway.

Less firehose.

More filing cabinet.

This is why Wisconsin matters so much as a case study.

It reveals something deeply unsettling about American history:

Progressivism and racial inequality are not opposites.

They can coexist quite comfortably.

A society may support:

• labor rights,

• public education,

• environmental protections,

• public investment,

• and democratic reform

while still preserving racial inequality through:

• housing,

• policing,

• wealth distribution,

• school funding,

• and political geography.

Human beings possess a remarkable ability to demand justice in one room while quietly preserving hierarchy in another.

Entire political coalitions have perfected this balancing act with the grace of an Olympic gymnast filing tax deductions.

Modern Wisconsin still reflects these contradictions.

Urban centers like:

• Madison

• and Milwaukee

lean heavily Democratic.

Many suburban and rural regions lean Republican.

The state became nationally famous during battles over:

• labor rights,

• union power,

• legislative maps,

• and partisan gerrymandering.

Which forces a difficult national realization:

America’s racial contradictions were never confined to one region.

The South often displayed them more openly.

The North frequently buried them beneath bureaucracy, property law, zoning regulations, and smiling civic professionalism.

One used spectacle.

The other used systems.

And perhaps that is the most dangerous form of inequality of all:
the kind capable of convincing itself it no longer exists.

Because once a society begins imagining racism solely as cartoon villainy from another era, it becomes extraordinarily easy to overlook the quieter machinery operating in the present.

The signs disappeared.

The spreadsheets arrived.

And somewhere between the zoning board meeting and the district map, the republic quietly convinced itself the problem had already been solved.

Architectural Worlds Through Words 🧭

Thanks to you, we had a very good run.

When I first entered Johnny Depp’s People’s Artist Program, I had no idea what would happen. I hoped a few people might connect with the work.

Instead, hundreds of friends, readers, artists, architects, writers, and kind strangers rallied behind these strange architectural worlds I’ve been building through words.

Together, we climbed into the Top 20.

Then the Top 15.

Then the Top 10.

And when the dust settled, we finished with a strong 6th-place finish.

That’s something worth celebrating.

I want to thank every person who voted, shared a post, sent a message, made a donation, offered encouragement, or simply took the time to read my work. Every act of support helped carry this project forward.

I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally, and I will do my very best to do so in the days ahead.

What moved me most was not the competition itself, but the community that formed around it. Old friends reappeared. New friends joined the journey. Conversations began. People connected through art, architecture, history, storytelling, and imagination.

Together, we also helped raise awareness and support for ✨ The Art of Elysium ✨ and its mission of using art as a catalyst for social change. For me, that is a meaningful accomplishment all by itself.

Many of you discovered my work for the first time through this experience. Others have been traveling alongside me for years.

Either way, I hope you’ll continue the journey.

The competition may be over, but the architectural worlds continue to grow.

In fact, there are several exciting projects already taking shape.

📚 The portfolio book I worked on alongside a remarkable group of Julia Morgan scholars is finally available on Amazon: Julia Morgan, FAIA: Recipient of the 2014 AIA Gold Medal.

The book played a role in the effort that led to Julia Morgan receiving the AIA Gold Medal posthumously in 2014. Even in death, she was accomplishing firsts.

Julia became the first woman in the history of the American Institute of Architects to receive its highest honor as a solo recipient. At the time, the AIA had existed for more than 150 years, having been founded in 1857.

Since Julia's posthumous Gold Medal in 2014, two additional women have received the AIA Gold Medal as individual recipients, and two others have received the honor as part of collaborative teams.

In a very real sense, Julia was still opening doors.

That story has always resonated deeply with me. Throughout her life she entered rooms she was not expected to enter, crossed thresholds others said were closed, and expanded the possibilities for those who followed.

Today, many of us continue walking through those doors.

It examines where people lived, worked, drank, gambled, loved, and built new identities during one of the most transformative periods in American history.

🏛️ And the Phoebe Hearst biography continues to grow, tracing the life and influence of one of California’s most important philanthropists, cultural patrons, and institution builders. Her impact can still be seen today in education, architecture, the arts, and civic life throughout California and beyond.

In other words, there are many more worlds yet to build.

“Good night, and good luck.”

Last week, CBS Radio News quietly went off the air.

No parade.

No national moment of reflection.

No lowering of flags.

Just a final broadcast and the end of a nearly century-long chapter in American life.

For 99 years, CBS Radio carried the voices that narrated America’s story.

When bombs fell on London, Americans heard Edward R. Murrow reporting through the darkness.

When Pearl Harbor was attacked, CBS Radio carried the news.

When President Kennedy was assassinated, Americans gathered around radios and televisions to make sense of the unimaginable.

The Moon landing.

Watergate.

The fall of the Berlin Wall.

September 11.

For nearly a century, CBS Radio served as one of the nation’s civic campfires.

Today, the campfire has gone dark.

I have always loved old radio.

Not because it was perfect.

Not because journalists were somehow more virtuous than they are today.

But because radio required something we seem to have misplaced:

Attention.

People stopped what they were doing.

They listened.

Families gathered in living rooms.

Citizens shared a common set of facts.

The nation experienced events together.

Today, we live inside a thousand separate realities.

Everyone has their own channel.

Their own algorithm.

Their own version of events.

The old gatekeepers are gone.

Some of that is unquestionably good.

Many voices that were once excluded now have platforms.

Writers no longer need permission from New York publishers.

Independent journalists can reach audiences directly.

Substack itself is proof of that.

But every gain carries a cost.

The old networks were flawed institutions.

Yet they also created a shared public square.

When Walter Cronkite spoke, millions of Americans heard the same words at the same moment.

Today, we are all broadcasters.

Few of us are listeners.

📻

The closure of CBS Radio feels symbolic.

Not because radio is disappearing.

Radio will survive in podcasts, streaming, satellite broadcasts, and countless digital forms.

The technology isn’t dying.

The institution is.

What disappears is something harder to define.

A common story.

A common room.

A common conversation.

The nation once gathered around a wooden radio cabinet.

Today we gather around glowing rectangles designed to keep us separated into increasingly narrow tribes.

Perhaps that is progress.

Perhaps it isn’t.

History will decide.

My favorite figure from that era remains Edward R. Murrow.

Murrow reported from London while German bombs fell around him.

He understood that journalism was not entertainment.

It was a public trust.

His famous sign-off still resonates nearly a century later:

“Good night, and good luck.”

Those words carried a quiet warning.

Democracy requires citizens who are informed.

Freedom requires institutions worthy of trust.

Truth requires people willing to seek it.

As CBS Radio signs off after ninety-nine years, those lessons feel as relevant as ever.

The broadcast has ended.

The question is whether anyone is still listening. 📻🔥🧭

Well... somehow we’re still moving forward 😊

When this journey began, I hoped a few people might connect with the work. I never imagined so many friends, readers, fellow artists, architects, writers, and kind strangers would rally around these strange architectural worlds I’ve been building through words.

And yet, here we are.

That achievement belongs as much to this community as it does to me.

That belief sits at the center of my own work as well. Art is not merely decoration. It is a way of examining the structures that shape our lives, imagining better possibilities, and building community around shared human experiences.

And now another doorway appears before us.

The next goal is the Top 5.

Can we get there?

I honestly don’t know.

But I do know that we’ve already accomplished something meaningful together, and for that I am profoundly grateful.

At some point, while examining modern voting battles in:

• Texas,

• Georgia,

• Alabama,

• Louisiana,

• and North Carolina,

one begins to notice something awkward.

The same geography keeps appearing.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Like a ghost that refuses to leave the photograph.

Modern America likes to imagine racism as something safely trapped in black-and-white photographs:
firehoses,
lynching postcards,
segregated lunch counters,
men in suspenders screaming outside schoolhouses while sweating through their shirts like angry boiled hams.

The national story prefers racism dramatic and obvious because obvious villains are emotionally convenient.

The problem is that history rarely disappears so neatly.

It mutates.

It adapts.

It changes clothes, updates its vocabulary, hires consultants, and learns how to speak in procedural language.

Which is why understanding modern voting battles requires understanding the long historical architecture beneath them.

Because the struggle over the Black vote did not begin with district maps or voter ID laws.

It began with slavery itself.

From the earliest days of the republic, the Southern economy depended heavily on enslaved Black labor.

Cotton.

Tobacco.

Rice.

Sugar.

Infrastructure.

Domestic labor.

The wealth generated through slavery became enormous. By the mid-19th century, cotton produced by enslaved labor was one of the most valuable commodities on Earth.

America, a nation loudly advertising liberty to the world, had quietly constructed much of its economic engine atop forced labor.

This created a moral contradiction so large the country eventually attempted to solve it through the traditional American method of conflict resolution:
catastrophic violence.

After the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery, formerly enslaved Black Americans briefly experienced a period of expanding political participation during Reconstruction.

Black legislators were elected.

Black voters entered political life.

For a moment, the South appeared poised to become something radically different.

Then came the backlash.

And the backlash was ferocious.

Southern states developed increasingly elaborate systems designed to restore white political control while technically operating within the framework of democracy.

The methods became infamous:

• poll taxes,

• literacy tests,

• grandfather clauses,

• property requirements,

• intimidation,

• economic retaliation,

• violence,

• and outright terrorism.

The Ku Klux Klan did not exactly emerge from a national wellness retreat.

This period eventually hardened into what became known as Jim Crow laws.

Under Jim Crow, segregation became not merely social custom but legal architecture.

Schools.

Transportation.

Housing.

Restaurants.

Hospitals.

Voting.

Even death itself became segregated in some cemeteries.

The system was vast, bureaucratic, and astonishingly thorough.

Which is one reason modern Americans sometimes misunderstand it.

Jim Crow was not merely a collection of individual prejudices.

It was infrastructure.

🏛️

And infrastructure has a peculiar quality:
it outlives the people who build it.

A highway continues shaping traffic patterns long after the ribbon-cutting ceremony ends.

A district boundary continues shaping elections long after the original mapmakers retire to Florida to complain about waiter service.

Likewise, racial systems continue influencing geography, wealth, education, housing, and political power long after the original laws themselves disappear.

This is one reason debates about racism in America often feel so confusing and emotionally explosive.

Many Americans hear the word “racism” and imagine only individual hatred:
slurs,
cross burnings,
neo-Nazis collecting Confederate teaspoons somewhere in a swamp.

But much of modern inequality operates structurally.

Through accumulated geography.

Through inherited advantage.

Through school districts, property values, zoning laws, transportation systems, lending patterns, and political representation.

The old signs vanished.

The floor plan remained.

This helps explain why the geography of modern voting battles matters so much.

When critics look at states repeatedly involved in disputes over:

• voting access,

• district maps,

• racial vote dilution,

• and election law,

they do not see isolated incidents floating in historical vacuum.

They see continuity.

Not identical systems.

Not the same era.

But connected architecture.

Supporters of modern voting restrictions often reject these comparisons entirely. They argue contemporary election laws are race-neutral and designed to protect electoral integrity.

And to be fair, modern America is not 1957 Alabama.

Black Americans vote, hold office, lead corporations, shape culture, and occupy positions of power unimaginable during the segregation era.

The country genuinely changed.

But critics argue the underlying struggle over political power never fully disappeared.

It evolved.

Less sheriff with a baton.

More attorney with a district map.

And yet there is another complication lurking beneath this story.

Because if racism were only Southern, then states like Wisconsin should not fit the pattern at all.

And yet they do.

Which raises an uncomfortable possibility:

Perhaps the South was not the disease.

Perhaps it was simply the place where America displayed its symptoms most openly.

Well… somehow we’re still moving forward 😊

We officially made it into the Top 15 of Johnny Depp’s People’s Artist Program, and now the next threshold appears ahead of us: the Top 10.

This whole experience continues to feel surreal, humbling, strange, beautiful, and unexpectedly moving.

What began as a small experiment in sharing my work more openly with the world has transformed into something much larger: a reminder of how powerful encouragement, community, and collective imagination can be.

Many of you have been traveling alongside me for the last year through Twain’s Gazette, through essays about architecture, social history, Gold Rush saloons, Julia Morgan, speculative futures, strange political landscapes, and the idea of “narrative architecture” itself. Others have only recently stumbled into these architectural worlds. Either way, I’m grateful you’re here.

And through all of this, something important has happened beyond the competition itself:

Together we’ve helped raise support and awareness for ✨ The Art of Elysium ✨, whose mission deeply resonates with me:

“The Art of Elysium is an artist organization built on the idea that through service, art becomes a catalyst for social change.”

That belief sits at the center of my own work as well.

Now that we understand districts, we can finally arrive at the truly unsettling part:

Somebody draws the map.

Not God.

Not nature.

Not a flock of impartial civic owls descending from the heavens carrying sacred geometry in their talons.

Human beings draw the lines.

And human beings, history has repeatedly demonstrated, become unusually creative whenever power is involved.

Every ten years, after the census, states redraw congressional and legislative districts to reflect population changes.

In theory, this process sounds perfectly reasonable.

People move.

Cities grow.

Populations shift.

Representation adjusts accordingly.

Simple.

Unfortunately, this is America, where even the process of drawing shapes on paper eventually evolves into a blood sport sponsored by consultants and litigated by men named Chip.

The process is called redistricting.

The manipulation of that process for political advantage is called gerrymandering.

The term dates back to 1812, when Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry approved a district map so grotesquely contorted that critics claimed it resembled a salamander.

Thus:
Gerry-mander.

Which somehow sounds both ridiculous and sinister, like an amphibious bond villain who specializes in election law.

At its core, gerrymandering allows politicians to shape electoral outcomes not by changing votes, but by rearranging how votes are grouped geographically.

And once modern technology enters the picture, the process becomes astonishingly precise.

The old political bosses once relied on instinct, local gossip, and whatever bartender happened to know which neighborhoods hated the mayor.

Modern mapmakers use:

• demographic databases,

• voting histories,

• census data,

• consumer behavior,

• geographic information systems,

• predictive modeling,

• and algorithms sophisticated enough to make NASA look underfunded.

The modern district map is no longer a sketch.

It is political engineering.

Two primary techniques dominate gerrymandering.

The first strategy is called packing.

Packing means concentrating large numbers of similar voters into a small number of districts.

For example, mapmakers might pack large numbers of Black voters or Democratic voters into one district where they win overwhelmingly.

That district becomes extremely safe for that group.

But because each district elects its own representative, concentrating too many voters into one district can reduce their influence in surrounding districts.

The opposing party can then win those surrounding districts by smaller margins and gain more seats overall.

The total number of votes has not changed.

Only the grouping changed.

The second technique is called cracking.

Cracking splits communities apart across several districts so their collective voting power weakens.

A neighborhood that might have formed a strong voting bloc suddenly gets divided into fragments scattered across multiple districts.

Instead of one loud voice, you get several smaller whispers drifting helplessly through committee hearings.

Packing traps influence.

Cracking dissolves it.

Together, they allow mapmakers to reshape political outcomes with eerie efficiency.

And this is where race enters the picture in ways both visible and invisible.

Because of America’s long history of:

• segregation,

• discriminatory housing policy,

• redlining,

• economic inequality,

• and uneven development,

many racial communities remain geographically clustered.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

A district map, therefore, can influence racial political power without ever explicitly mentioning race at all.

And this creates one of the great legal gray zones of modern American politics.

States accused of racial gerrymandering often respond:

“These maps were drawn for partisan reasons, not racial ones.”

Critics respond:

“In many places, race and party overlap so heavily that pretending they are unrelated is like insisting smoke and fire are merely close acquaintances.”

Many of the fiercest modern redistricting battles emerged in:

• Texas,

• Georgia,

• Alabama,

• Louisiana,

• and North Carolina.

The pattern is difficult to ignore.

These district maps did not emerge naturally from the forest like mushrooms after rain.

Many overlap directly with the historical geography of slavery, segregation, and the long struggle over Black political participation in the South.

Which is precisely why the weakening of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 mattered so much.

Before Shelby County v. Holder, many states with histories of racial discrimination had to submit proposed district maps for federal approval before those maps could take effect.

The government could stop potentially discriminatory maps before elections occurred.

After Shelby County, that system largely disappeared.

Now maps are often implemented first and challenged later through lawsuits that can drag on for years while elections proceed under contested boundaries.

The burden shifted again.

The umbrella folded itself neatly during the thunderstorm and wished everyone the best of luck.

Then came another major Supreme Court case:
Rucho v. Common Cause.

The Court ruled that federal courts generally could not resolve disputes over partisan gerrymandering.

The majority acknowledged that extreme partisan gerrymandering may conflict with democratic ideals.

But the Court concluded there was no clear constitutional standard for determining when partisan mapmaking had gone too far.

Which, translated loosely into ordinary English, sounded somewhat like:

“Yes, this may be deeply unhealthy, but nobody can quite agree where the poison officially begins.”

Critics were horrified.

Supporters argued the Constitution leaves such disputes to the political process itself.

Either way, one thing became unmistakably clear:

The referees had stepped farther away from the field.

And so American democracy entered a strange new era.

The fight over voting rights no longer revolves solely around whether citizens can vote.

It now includes whether the surrounding political geometry allows those votes to carry meaningful force once cast.

The polling place may appear orderly.

The ballot may slide smoothly into the machine.

The election workers may smile politely beneath fluorescent lights while somebody’s toddler licks an “I Voted” sticker in the corner.

Everything appears democratic.

Yet somewhere beneath the visible process, hidden inside the architecture of the map itself, political power may already have been carefully redistributed long before Election Day arrived.

The old poll tax became a software problem.
