They did not set out to find Death Valley.

They set out for gold.

They carried with them the same fever that pulled men across oceans and over mountains—the promise first whispered at Sutter’s Mill and shouted down every muddy street from Missouri to Panama. Gold lay in California, they were told. Easy gold. River gold. The kind you could coax from the earth with a pan, a little patience, and a great deal of belief.

But belief, like water, can run out.

🧭 The Shortcut

In 1849, a wagon company broke from the established trail.

They were not reckless, at least not by their own estimation. They were efficient. Strategic. They had maps—of a sort. They had rumors, which in that season passed for intelligence. A “shortcut” would save time, spare animals, beat the rush. It would deliver them to the goldfields ahead of the swarm.

It delivered them instead into absence.

They would later be called the Lost ‘49ers—a name that sounds almost jaunty until you realize it is less a title than a verdict.

🏜️ The Valley That Wasn’t a Valley

What they encountered was not a valley in any familiar sense.

No rivers to pan.
No timber to build.
No shade to bargain with.

Only a basin of salt and heat, a place that seemed less formed than withheld.

In the Sierra, a man might dig.
In the rivers, he might sift.
Here, there was nothing to do but endure.

The logic of the Gold Rush collapsed instantly:

• No water → no placer mining

• No placer → no quick wealth

• No wealth → no reason to stay

And yet they could not leave. Not quickly. Not cleanly.

🔥 Consumption

The first currency to fail was not gold. It was time.

Food dwindled.
Animals weakened.
Tools—those proud instruments of extraction—became irrelevant.

Wagons, once symbols of forward motion, became burdens. Then resources.

Wood was stripped from them for fire. Iron fittings pried loose. Canvas repurposed. The architecture of migration dismantled itself plank by plank in the name of survival.

What could not be carried was burned.

🪙 The Gold Beneath Their Feet

And yet—this is the quietest cruelty of all—they were not wrong about the gold.

They walked over it.

Not in rivers. Not in glittering seams at their feet. But locked inside the mountains that hemmed them in, threaded through quartz, buried in rock that would not yield to a pan or a hopeful swirl of water.

Decades later, men would return to this same region and carve into those mountains—at places like the Keane Wonder Mine—pulling out gold with drills, mills, and chemicals the Lost ’49ers could not have imagined.

The wealth was there.

But it required:

• Time they did not have

• Tools they did not carry

• Knowledge that had not yet arrived

It is one thing to miss gold.

It is another to stand upon it, starving.

🧂 The Other Gold

And yet the desert held another kind of wealth entirely.

Not the glittering metal they sought, but something pale, powdery, and stubbornly useful: borax.

At sites like the later Harmony Borax Works, this mineral would be refined and hauled out across the desert by the famed 20-mule team borax wagons.

They called it “white gold.”

It did not intoxicate. It did not inspire madness. It did not build instant towns of canvas and vice.

But it endured.

Beneath the feet of the Lost ’49ers lay not one, but two kinds of wealth:

• Gold locked in stone

• Borax spread across the basin

One demanded faith.
The other demanded patience.

Neither could save them.

🍷 The Absent Saloon

In every other mining landscape—from the foothills near Coloma to the fevered camps that would later rise in the Panamints—there is a pattern:

Where gold appears,
a bar follows.
Where a bar appears,
a brothel is never far behind.

But here, in this accidental geography, there was nothing to spend.

No whiskey.
No faro tables.
No velvet curtains or backroom arrangements.

Only thirst.

🧭 Fracture

Groups split. They had to.

Some stayed with the wagons. Others struck out on foot, climbing the surrounding mountains in search of an exit that refused to reveal itself. Families divided, not out of conflict, but calculation.

The landscape encouraged fragmentation. There was no single path forward—only directions that might, or might not, end in water.

A small number survived.

They found their way out—over the mountains, toward settlements that must have seemed impossibly lush by comparison.

One woman, pausing at the edge of escape, is said to have turned back and spoken the name:

“Goodbye, Death Valley.”

🧠 The Lesson the Desert Taught

The story of the Lost ’49ers is often told as a cautionary tale.

But it is more than that.

It is a confrontation between two economies:

• The Gold Rush economy: extraction, speculation, indulgence

• The desert economy: scarcity, endurance, and, eventually, industry

Gold demanded belief.
Borax demanded patience.

And the desert demanded everything.

🎭 The Inversion

Everywhere else in your story, the narrative is additive:

Gold → Money → Bars → Brothels → Society

Here, the sequence fractures—and reforms:

Hope → Loss → Silence → (years later) Industry

No gold in the pan.
No money in the pocket.
No bar to celebrate in.
No brothel to forget in.

Only the knowledge—arriving too late—that the wealth they sought had been there all along.

They went looking for a place where the earth would give them gold.

Instead, they found a place that kept its riches hidden—
and made them pay for the difference.

I’m not sorry to say it: I understand the appeal.

Donald Trump smiles like a man who has already decided the room belongs to him. On camera, he is effortless. Warm, even. A kind of grand, familiar American archetype, the friendly, egotistical tycoon who seems as though he might clap you on the shoulder, ask your opinion, and then proceed to ignore it entirely.

From a distance, he is not alarming.

He is magnetic.

And that may be the most important fact about him.

But governing is not a camera test.

And Trump does not so much govern as accelerate.

He moves with the logic of impulse. One declaration arrives before the last has had time to prove itself true, false, or something in between. He speaks not like a man describing reality, but like a man attempting to author it in real time.

René Descartes gave us:
I think, therefore I am.

Trump appears to have revised it for the age of television:
I speak, therefore it is.

Or perhaps something even older is at work.

In Genesis, God says, Let there be light.

And light obeys.

And the strange thing, the unnerving thing, is that he often appears to believe himself.

Not in the careful way of a politician shaping a message, but in the immediate, total way of someone for whom saying and believing collapse into the same act.

It is not lying in the traditional sense.

It is something closer to wishcasting.

Policy by proclamation.

Akin to making a wish and expecting it to come true, like a child whose imagination has not yet learned the limits of the world.

The Secret, rewritten as statecraft.

So we are left with a peculiar civic task.

In an ordinary administration, the question is whether a policy will work.

In this one, the more basic question comes first:

What is actually happening?

Because somewhere between the announcement and the aftermath, between the televised certainty and the unresolved reality,

we are being asked to live inside a sentence that has not yet been finished.

🧭 Let’s Pause

The harder part is this:

Looking at what is not being fully analyzed.

Not even in the places that pride themselves on seriousness. Not even in The Guardian. Not even in that timeless, supposedly intellectual magazine of and for the people, The Atlantic.

Perhaps they cannot keep up either.

Every time he says squirrel, the press jumps to the next tree.

That is not failure.

That is news.

News captures what is happening while it is still happening.

But a presidency like this cannot be understood through motion alone.

It requires something slower.

Someone has to stop.

So let this be that pause.

Because if we do not stop to reflect,

we are not analyzing a presidency.

We are surviving its weather.

🧭 What No One Has Time to Go Back and Ask

I. Iran

The ayatollah is dead.

That sentence alone should have stopped the world.

And yet, almost immediately, it dissolved into uncertainty.

A successor is named, but not clearly seen. Authority is asserted, but not fully established.

At one point, even Trump suggested we may not know whether Iran’s leadership is intact.

So I’ll ask the simplest question:

With whom are we making a deal?

Because diplomacy requires a counterpart.

And right now, the sentence feels unfinished.

II. Venezuela

Iran did not come out of nowhere.

Weeks earlier, the United States removed the sitting president of Venezuela.

The justification was familiar:

Drugs.
Corruption.
Instability.

And then something else happened.

Oil began to move.
Sanctions loosened.
American companies returned.

The sequence was clean.

Remove the leader.
Reopen the resource.
Re-enter the market.

We were told this was about security.

But oil flowed faster than explanations.

So now I ask:

Was Venezuela an isolated act?

Or a precedent?

III. The Story We Are Told

Before anything happens, it is explained.

Drugs.
Security.
Stability.

The justification arrives already sealed against opposition.

Because who argues in favor of fentanyl?

No one.

But then comes the leap.

We are told fentanyl is down.

A victory number.

But numbers require context.

Down where?
Measured how?
Caused by what?

Because reality is quieter.

Public health. Treatment. Naloxone.

Slow work.

Untelevised work.

But that is not what we see.

We see boats struck.

Routes disrupted.

It looks like control.

It feels like control.

But feeling is not causation.

IV. The Quiet Machinery

While the world watches the explosions, something else is moving.

Tariffs.

No spectacle.

No breaking news.

But everything bends around them.

They are pressure.

You may trade… but not freely.
You may participate… but at a cost.

This is not spectacle.

This is structure.

And it prepares the ground for everything else.

The Pattern

Pressure.
Justification.
Action.
Aftermath.

And then,

before the aftermath can be understood,

the next declaration.

🧭 And Then It Arrives

It is easy to think all of this is happening “out there.”

But power travels.

And when it arrives,

it looks different.

It looks like this:

🧭 The Homefront

I judge the economy by the price of Jack Daniel’s.

A year ago, I could get a Jack and Coke for seven dollars.

Yesterday, I paid eleven.

In a dive bar.

I went to the grocery store and bought six items for forty-seven dollars.

No meat.

Nothing extravagant.

Just… more than it used to be.

We are told inflation is cooling.

Maybe.

But inflation is not a number.

It is a feeling.

You feel it when you hesitate.
When you calculate.
When the ordinary becomes noticeable.

The baseline has moved.

At the border, enforcement intensifies.

Systems move faster.
Less visible.
Harder to track.

And yes,

we do have a responsibility to deal with crime.

Including those who commit serious offenses in this country, whether they were born here or entered illegally.

When individuals come into the country unlawfully and then commit serious crimes, that is not abstract.

That is real.

That requires a response.

These are not imaginary problems.

And yet,

recognizing the problem is not the same as understanding the method.

🧭 So… Where the Hell Am I?

This is where my own uncertainty begins.

Do I protest… or not protest?
Do I agree… or disagree?

Because I don’t entirely disagree.

That’s the problem.

And also the point.

So what is this?

Is it authoritarianism?
Oligarchy?
Capitalism at scale?
Or just… good business?

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong.

I’m asking something more basic.

What is it?

Because I have not seen anything quite like it in my lifetime.

Have you?

Because until we can answer that,

we are still inside the sentence

while it is being written.

I am looking for a place to grow old.

Not much.
A small place.
Near the ocean. That part is not negotiable.
Light, air, a desk for writing.

Something like a bungalow in Big Sur, or Pacific Grove, or Mendocino.
Not luxury. Just dignity with a view.

A place in the spirit of Henry Miller or Jack Kerouac in Big Sur. The kind of place where the work matters more than the square footage.

They were successful, yes. But they were no Mark Zuckerberg.

In fact, Kerouac was famously broke when he lived there, writing against the edge of the continent with more conviction than cash.

That’s the tradition I thought I was entering.

Somewhere along the way, the artist’s cottage became a luxury listing.

Instead, I find myself staring at waiting lists.

Five years. Ten years.
Income caps that almost fit, but not quite.
Rents that assume a retirement cushion I do not have.

It occurs to me, gently now, like a truth that doesn’t want to startle:

I am not searching for housing.
I am negotiating with time.

The life of a retired artist.

A curious thing to plan for, especially if no one ever told you how.

I always pictured myself as an artist.

As a little girl in Louisiana, I sat beside my grandmother watching black-and-white films flicker across the screen like polite ghosts. I loved old movies then and I love them still.

My idea of the West did not come from maps. It came from television.

Gunsmoke.
Wagon Train.
The Rifleman with the beautiful Chuck Connors.

That was my introduction to landscape. Not land as property, but land as possibility. It led me, eventually, to Mark Twain, and I figured if a person could make a life out of wandering and observing, well, that sounded like a fine profession to me.

Europe arrived the same way, by screen and imagination.

I watched An American in Paris and made a quiet promise to myself.
I watched Rear Window and took careful notes on Grace Kelly, who seemed to understand that a well-chosen outfit and a well-timed entrance could solve half of life’s problems.

Midge, from Hitchcock’s Vertigo, was a lingerie designer on Nob Hill, working at her drafting table in a perfectly good apartment, suggested something even more radical:

That an artist might sit at a desk, make things all day, and still afford the rent.

Imagine that.

Then came Auntie Mame, with Rosalind Russell sweeping through life like a well-dressed weather system.

That was the model.
Not wealth exactly, but freedom with style.

Yes, I always saw myself as an artist.

First a pianist.
Then an architect.
Now a historian and writer.

I intended, quite seriously, to end my days in a small cottage by the sea. Not for romance, exactly, but for orientation. The ocean has a way of keeping time honestly. It does not rush you, but it does not let you forget that time is moving.

A reasonable plan, I thought.

But somewhere along the way, I was informed, with great authority:

You can’t live like that.

So I did what many sensible people do. I became very sensible.

For twenty years, I worked in accounting and finance. My soul and I maintained a polite but distant relationship during that time.

Eventually, it became clear that this arrangement would not hold

Around thirty, something shifted. It was the year that Saturn returned, if you like that sort of explanation.

By thirty-three, I had excused myself from that life and returned to the one I had been meaning to live all along.

I applied to one school only: the California College of Arts and Crafts. They said yes, which I took as a sign of good judgment on their part.

I studied in Paris, following the path of Julia Morgan, and walked through the same neighborhoods as Picasso, Hemingway, and Gertrude Stein, doing my best to behave as if I belonged there.

I read Down and Out in Paris and London and learned that life could be lived quite fully without acquiring every object in the catalog.

I brought that lesson home with me.

I stopped chasing what they call the American Dream.
I chose something looser, lighter on its feet.

A life that, at its best, felt a bit like flying.

And now I find myself in the third act.

A fine act, I’m told by Jane Fonda. Full of reflection, perspective, and ideally, a comfortable chair.

My friends, who are younger and admirably prepared, have assembled the proper materials:

401(k)s
property
inheritance

I, on the other hand, have assembled experiences.

I have traveled. I have studied. I have lived in a way that made sense to me at the time, which is the only way any of us ever truly manages it.

Most recently, I went to Japan.

No regrets.

What I do have, in addition to a well-stamped passport, is this:

Fifty years of paying into Social Security.

One of the more practical inventions to come out of the New Deal.

A social program.

Yes, that word again. Still standing, despite its reputation.

The Social Security Act made a simple and rather elegant promise:

That time spent working would return to you later as a measure of stability.

A kind of national agreement to remember each other.

Of course, like many elegant ideas, it was not distributed evenly at the start.

It arrived carrying the language of fairness, but moved through a landscape still organized by older, harder lines—segregation, discrimination, policies that decided in advance whose time would count and whose would be deferred.

And part of the “everyone” it missed looked very much like me.

In places like West Oakland, where I have studied and walked and paid attention, time did not accumulate in a straight line.

It took detours shaped by red lines and restricted deeds.
It was delayed by jobs excluded and neighborhoods contained.
Occasionally, it was interrupted altogether—reset, rerouted, or quietly erased before it could compound.

The system kept time.

It simply did not keep it the same way for everyone.

So when I sit down with a housing application and notice that the waiting list stretches a decade into the future, I don’t take it personally.

It’s not that the system has singled me out.

It’s simply that I have arrived at the end of a very long story, and the story is still sorting itself out.

I thought I was looking for a place to live.

A small, quiet space near the water where I could write and grow older without unnecessary drama.

But the search has a way of clarifying things.

Some people arrive at this stage with a tidy accumulation of time and resources.
Others arrive with a rich collection of experiences and a slightly more creative set of logistics.

Both, I would argue, are forms of wealth.

I stand now at a fork in the road.

Not lost. Just… considering my options.

Saturn has returned—punctual as ever, every 29.7 years—apparently keeping better records than I do.

And I ask, in a spirit of practical curiosity:

How does one make a life here, at this stage, with what one has?

The view is still there.

The ocean hasn’t withdrawn its invitation.
Last I checked, the Pacific hasn’t been privatized.

I don’t believe I have run out of time.

I believe I am standing at the edge of a system that was never quite designed for a life like mine.

So now I have a different sort of problem:

How do I reach what has always been within sight?

There is a town in California that still exists.

You simply can’t see it anymore.

Stand on the shore of Folsom Lake on a quiet morning and look across the water. Beneath that calm blue surface once stood a small, noisy Gold Rush town where miners argued over cards, fiddles played in dance halls, and whiskey glasses clinked long after sunset.

The town was called Negro Hill.

Like many places born during the California Gold Rush, it appeared almost overnight and disappeared almost as quickly.

Only in this case, the disappearance was literal.

⛏️ When Gold Was Found, Towns Followed

In 1849, prospectors spread like ants along the banks of the American River, scratching through gravel for the metal that had sent half the world racing toward California.

Among those miners were Black men from the eastern United States. Some were free. Others were formerly enslaved men who had come west hoping that a gold pan might buy them something the law had not yet guaranteed.

Somewhere along a bluff above the river, a group of these miners found promising ground.

Gold Rush towns did not require permission to exist. They simply appeared wherever a few lucky pans convinced people to stay.

Tents went up first. Then wooden shacks. Then stores.

Soon there were boarding houses, saloons, and gambling rooms.

Within a few years, more than a thousand people were living there.

🎲 Where the Gold Was Spent

Mining towns were places where wealth moved quickly.

The miner’s day was spent knee-deep in cold river water.
The miner’s evening was spent somewhere warmer.

Negro Hill had the usual institutions of Gold Rush civilization:

• saloons
• gambling tables
• boarding houses
• dance halls
• supply stores

Gold dust changed hands across faro tables. Fiddlers played until the candles burned low. Lamps flickered along the bluff above the river.

In towns like this, the gold discovered during the day often returned to circulation before midnight.

🏠 The Boarding House That Wasn’t Just a Boarding House

Now we should pause for a moment and translate a bit of nineteenth-century frontier vocabulary.

When Gold Rush records mention a “boarding house,” they are not always describing the polite establishment one might imagine from Victorian novels.

In many mining towns, the term was a social umbrella.

A boarding house might indeed rent beds to traveling miners. But very often it also functioned as:

• a saloon downstairs
• a gambling room in the back
• and rooms upstairs rented by women who were not there to serve breakfast.

In other words, many boarding houses were brothels by another name.

The arrangement was practical. Mining camps were overwhelmingly male. Thousands of miners flooded through these river towns with pockets of gold dust and very little domestic life.

Hospitality, gambling, alcohol, and sex tended to gather under the same roof.

The language of the time preferred softer words.

But the business model was perfectly clear.

💃 The Women of the Gold Rush Night Economy

The women who worked in these establishments came from many places.

Gold Rush prostitution was surprisingly international.

In towns across California you could find:

• Black women running or working in boarding houses and dance halls
• French women, often referred to in newspapers as “French ladies,” who operated some of the most famous brothels in the mining districts
• Mexican and Chilean women connected to earlier Pacific mining cultures
• Chinese women, many of whom were trafficked into prostitution in later decades
• and women from the eastern United States who followed the boom westward

These women formed a crucial part of the night economy of the mining frontier.

Miners might dig gold during the day, but by evening the money flowed through a different set of businesses: saloons, gambling halls, dance houses, and boarding houses whose upstairs rooms quietly supported the oldest profession in human history.

The Gold Rush frontier was not tidy.

It was an ecosystem.

🌍 A Surprisingly Mixed Frontier

One of the striking features of early Gold Rush California was how fluid communities could be before later racial boundaries hardened.

Negro Hill appears to have included:

Black miners
white prospectors
Mexican and Chilean miners
Chinese laborers
merchants and travelers moving along the river

It was less a tidy town than a collision of people drawn together by geology and luck.

For a brief moment, opportunity scrambled the social hierarchy that governed the rest of the country.

⚖️ The Frontier Was Never Peaceful

Gold Rush towns could feel like democracies when the gold was flowing.

But the same volatility that created opportunity also created violence.

In 1855 the town witnessed a grim episode when a Black resident named William Hardy was lynched after being accused of killing a white miner.

Mob justice was a familiar feature of mining life.

As the richest placer deposits dwindled, many miners moved on.

Negro Hill began to fade.

🌊 The Town That Slipped Beneath the Water

Most Gold Rush towns simply withered.

Negro Hill had a more dramatic ending.

In the 1950s the construction of Folsom Dam flooded the American River valley to create Folsom Lake.

The mining settlement disappeared beneath the rising water.

Today the nearest landmark is a recreation site called Black Miners Bar, named in memory of the community that once stood there.

Most visitors launching kayaks or walking along the shoreline have no idea that beneath the lake lie the remains of a lively frontier town.

The California Gold Rush was never just a tale of solitary prospectors chasing nuggets in the river. It was a world of crowded towns, restless gamblers, multilingual dance halls, and boarding houses whose upstairs rooms kept the entire frontier economy humming.

Negro Hill reminds us that the Gold Rush was built not only by miners, but by the cooks, musicians, merchants, gamblers, and women of many nations who ran the establishments where the miners spent their gold.

Today the lake is quiet.

But beneath the water, the town is still there.

I happened to be in Paris the day the United States declared war on Iraq.

I was studying French at the Alliance Française, sitting in a classroom that felt like a miniature United Nations. Students had come from everywhere: Brazil, Morocco, Japan, Poland… and Iraq.

When the bombing began, I walked over to the Iraqi students after class. Most of them were women, serious young scholars who had come to Paris to study languages and build lives far removed from whatever was unfolding back home. I told them I was sorry. I told them I hoped their families were safe. I tried to explain, awkwardly, that many of us in the United States did not support what was happening.

One of them smiled gently.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “We know it’s not you. And it’s not us. It’s our leaders.”

Another nodded.

“As human beings we understand the problem. Our leaders make the errors.”

We were standing near the back of the classroom while the other students listened quietly from their desks, the room suddenly still.

Then the women stepped forward and we embraced each other right there in the room.

Just a small circle of strangers in a classroom in Paris, holding onto one another while the world outside decided to go to war.

That moment has stayed with me for years. Because in that small classroom we reached a conclusion that governments still seem unable to grasp:

Ordinary people rarely want to bomb each other.

Leaders do that.

The San Francisco Effect

I learned something else very quickly in Paris.

I stopped saying I was American.

Instead I said I was from San Francisco.

That always changed the mood instantly.

Instead of getting the suspicious stare reserved for what Europeans sometimes call the “ugly American,” people brightened.

“I love San Francisco!” they would say.

Or they would sing: I left my heart in San Francisco.

The French especially loved San Francisco. For some mysterious reason they also adored San Diego. But San Francisco held a special place in their imagination: fog, hills, poetry, revolution, jazz, freedom.

It struck me that cities sometimes develop reputations that are almost mythological. San Francisco had become shorthand for a certain kind of place. A place where ideas lived freely.

San Francisco had become a kind of diplomatic passport for me in Paris. The moment I said those two words, people relaxed. In their minds it represented a place of creativity, rebellion, and freedom of thought.

But later, when I began digging into the history of Iran, I discovered something surprising.

In the decades before the 1979 revolution, Iran had its own version of that reputation.

Tehran in the 1960s and 1970s was often described by visitors as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Middle East, full of universities, artists, students, and young professionals living in a rapidly modernizing society.

In some ways it had the same energy people associated with San Francisco: ambitious, intellectual, a little rebellious, and convinced the future was arriving any minute.

Which made the question even more puzzling.

How does a place like that transform, almost overnight, into something completely different?

The Iranians I Know

I studied architecture at California College of the Arts in Oakland, back when it was still called CCAC.

Architecture school is brutal. You practically live in the studio. Sleep becomes theoretical. Coffee becomes structural reinforcement.

One of my closest classmates was a young Iranian woman named Gilda.

She was funny and kind and soft-spoken. She had a short haircut and big brown eyes framed by impossibly long lashes. Her voice carried the faintest Iranian accent, a soft musical lilt.

Architecture school is like going through boot camp together. Gilda and I survived it side by side and graduated in the same cohort.

We stayed friends.

Today she lives not far from me.

She is not in Iran.

Thank God.

Over the years I have worked for several Iranians.

One of my favorite bosses was an elderly man in his eighties. Small, wiry, full of energy. He had come to the United States in the early 1970s and built several businesses. By the time I knew him he owned a whole block in Piedmont and lived quietly in Kensington.

He called himself Persian.

And despite his success, he still worked every day.

Every morning he would come into the bar he owned, check inventory, lift kegs, stock the beer coolers. He would leave around 7 p.m., satisfied that everything was running correctly.

In ten years of bartending, he was one of the best bosses I ever had.

Hard working. Fair. No nonsense.

A builder.

Another Iranian I worked with was rumored to be part of the old royal family. Her family had reportedly left Iran when the Shah fell.

You could see the elegance in the way she carried herself. She was an architect who owned her own firm just down the street from Julia Morgan’s old office on Pine Street in San Francisco.

She wore tailored pantsuits. Her thick black hair was cut short, just like Gilda’s. She spoke softly, with that same lilting Iranian accent.

I once saw photographs of her apartment. Probably Nob Hill. Beautiful.

And I remember thinking something curious.

Why do so many Iranian women in the United States wear their hair short?

Then I remembered: in Iran they were forced to cover it.

Freedom sometimes reveals itself in small gestures.

Like haircuts.

Or, as the world has recently seen, women in Iran removing their headscarves in public protest, letting their hair fall free as a quiet but unmistakable declaration that the next generation intends to write its own rules.

The more I thought about the Iranians I knew—smart, funny, hardworking people who had built lives across the world—the harder it was to reconcile them with the country that appeared nightly on the news.

Somewhere between the Iran my friends came from and the Iran I saw in the headlines, something enormous had happened.

The San Francisco of the Middle East

With all the chaos in the Middle East lately, I found myself wondering:

What exactly happened to Iran?

How does a country throw out a king, embrace a group of ayatollahs, and then forty years later have its young people asking whether maybe the king’s son should come back and fix things?

That seemed like a lot of historical whiplash for one country.

So I did what any curious citizen does these days.

I consulted my research assistant.

Her name is KimchiBot.

KimchiBot is an artificial intelligence language model that lives inside my computer and claims to know the entire history of the world. She can produce a reasonably coherent summary of two thousand years of Persian civilization in about thirty seconds.

Of course, there are limitations.

Talking to KimchiBot is a little like downloading the entire internet into the brain of my four-year-old nephew Gavin. The information is technically all there, but the interpretation can wander off in surprising directions.

If I don’t guide her carefully she begins to hallucinate like a historian who has been locked in the library too long with a bottle of scotch.

Everybody is afraid artificial intelligence is about to take over the world.

Let me assure you.

At the moment, it still needs adult supervision.

Still, if you keep her pointed in roughly the right direction, KimchiBot is very good at assembling timelines.

Together we built a quick history of Iran.

And what we found was surprising.

Before 1979, Iran looked nothing like the country we see today.

Tehran in the 1960s and 1970s was a booming, cosmopolitan city where university students, artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs mixed with travelers and expatriates from Europe and the United States. Western rock music drifted out of nightclubs, cafés were filled with students arguing about politics and poetry, and Iranian pop stars performed in neon-lit venues while couples danced late into the night.

On winter weekends young Tehranis drove north into the Alborz Mountains to ski, then returned to the city for film festivals, lectures, and crowded bookstores where new ideas circulated as quickly as the espresso.

And on warm nights the city glowed: music spilling from cabarets along Laleh-Zar, headlights sliding past rows of plane trees on Pahlavi Street, students lingering in cafés while the snow-capped Alborz Mountains hovered in the distance like a painted backdrop to a film about a country convinced the future had already arrived.

In some ways it had the same electric energy people associate with San Francisco: youthful, intellectual, a little rebellious, and convinced the future was arriving any minute.

Which made the next chapter of the story even more puzzling.

Because in 1979, that entire world vanished almost overnight.

The Iranian Revolution overthrew the monarchy of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and replaced it with an Islamic Republic led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The revolution had been a coalition of students, workers, religious leaders, intellectuals, and political activists united by one goal: removing the Shah.

But revolutions have a way of narrowing once they succeed.

The clerical faction proved the most organized and gradually pushed aside the liberals, socialists, and secular reformers who had helped bring the old system down.

Iran became something entirely new.

And yet the story did not stop there.

Today most Iranians were born after the revolution.

They are young, educated, connected to the world through the internet, and increasingly impatient with the restrictions imposed by a government designed by their grandparents.

Even Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Shah, has commented on this generational divide in interviews. He himself has been outside Iran for nearly fifty years. He left the country as a teenager during the upheaval of 1979 and has lived in exile ever since.

That is roughly two generations

Which makes the situation even stranger. Many of the young people now protesting in the streets were not alive when the monarchy fell. According to him, some of them have begun turning to their parents and asking a question that is both simple and devastating:

“What the hell were you thinking?”

The children of the revolution are now questioning the revolution.

And it raises an uncomfortable question.

What has really changed?

History sometimes feels like it is running in circles. A monarchy is overthrown in the name of freedom. An autocracy falls and promises of democracy fill the air. But the new system becomes a theocracy. Then people demand democracy again. If the theocracy falls, what replaces it? Another strongman? Another revolution? Another cycle?

People everywhere keep chanting the same word—democracy—as if saying it often enough might summon it into existence.

Democracy, it turns out, is an elusive thing.

More like a shape-shifter than a permanent structure.

You think it is there.

And then suddenly it isn’t.

For a long moment I sat there staring at the timeline KimchiBot and I had assembled, wondering how a country can reinvent itself so completely and yet still feel unfinished.

Sometimes I think back to that classroom in Paris.

A handful of young women from Iraq and a student from San Francisco standing there awkwardly while the news of war rolled across television screens somewhere far away.

None of us had ordered the bombs.

None of us had voted on the strategy.

Yet somehow we had inherited the consequences.

For a moment we stood there unsure what to say, and then we simply embraced.

It was such a small thing.

But in that moment we understood something that still seems to escape so many people in power.

Most human beings do not actually want to be enemies.

They want to study, work, design buildings, raise families, and live ordinary lives.

The tragedy of Iran—like the tragedy of so many places in the world—is that history keeps placing extraordinary burdens on ordinary people.

And somewhere tonight, whether in Tehran, Baghdad, Paris, or San Francisco, a group of young people is probably standing in a hallway trying to make sense of the decisions made by the generations before them, asking the same question that echoes through history again and again:

What were you thinking?

🏛️ THE QUESTIONS AT THE DESK

For some time now, I have been wondering how things got so politically out of hand.

Why does Congress seem unable to act?
Where are the checks and balances we were taught defined American government?
Why are regulatory bodies left partially staffed when laws clearly outline how they are supposed to function?
Why do we behave as though only two political parties exist when several are legally recognized?

These questions arrive quietly, usually while reading the news or sitting at a desk late in the evening, trying to reconcile the civics textbook with lived reality.

Something feels structurally off.

Not broken in spectacle, but misaligned in foundation.

📜 THE FAMILY ARCHIVE

I come from a long line of civil rights activists.

My people started schools and educated communities at the peril of their lives. Education itself was once resistance. Civic participation was not theory in my family. It was protection. It was survival.

My Aunt Julia Mae became the first Black city council member in our small hometown of Bastrop, Louisiana.

She was an educator. She believed governance belonged to ordinary citizens willing to serve their communities.

I still have one of her campaign postcards.

It is small. Local. Printed for a race that never appeared on national television. Yet that postcard carries enormous weight. It represents neighbors deciding that representation mattered. That participation mattered. That someone from their own community should help guide public decisions.

Democracy, at its most real, often looks exactly like that.

🔥 WHEN PEOPLE BECOME FED UP

History moves when ordinary people decide silence costs more than participation.

Civil rights protesters.
Suffragettes.
Vietnam War demonstrators.
Labor unions organizing against exploitation.

None waited for permission from national leaders. Momentum formed from the ground upward.

Today, many Americans again feel uneasy about state power, public accountability, and the widening distance between citizens and institutions meant to serve them. Images from the present echo moments many believed were confined to history books.

And yet something else is happening too.

People are gathering. Asking questions. Paying attention again.

I find myself asking alongside them:

What are we doing?
What can we do?
Who are we?

🗳️ THE CIVICS WE FORGOT TO TEACH

Every major democratic expansion in American history began locally.

School boards.
City councils.
County offices.
Community organizing meetings held long before national change followed.

Somewhere along the way, civics education faded from practical instruction into distant symbolism. Students learned names and dates but not how governance actually functions. Few are taught how budgets are approved, how candidates file for office, or how local turnout shapes national policy.

Without civic literacy, frustration becomes helplessness.
With civic literacy, frustration becomes participation.

Perhaps the next democratic renewal will not begin with a presidential election.

Perhaps it begins when classrooms once again teach young people that government is not something happening elsewhere. It is something they can enter, shape, and steward.

Because by the time national politics takes the stage, the script has already been drafted.

The authors are almost always the people who showed up first.

🏛 I. The Machine

In the early 2000s, I found myself in Paris inside one of the most extraordinary modern structures ever built: the Centre Pompidou.

It is not a polite building. Its pipes and escalators live on the exterior. Its structure is visible. Its interior is vast and reconfigurable. It is less a museum than an engine.

If you enter the Pompidou, you enter a machine for knowledge.

On one of the upper floors there was an open salon filled with televisions broadcasting news from around the world. Comfortable chairs. Headphones. People from everywhere. Business suits. Students. Women in hijabs. Tourists.

Each person tuned to their nation’s narrative.

I moved from screen to screen.

The BBC.
French television.
Iraqi broadcasts.
Iranian coverage.
Afghan channels.
CCTV from China.
American networks.

Even when I did not understand the language, I understood the images.

And the images were not the same.

📺 II. The Blur

The war in Iraq looked different depending on where you were sitting.

On American television, the reporting felt disciplined. Strategic. Civilian casualties were rarely centered. Friendly fire incidents were softened. The narrative leaned toward order.

Elsewhere, grief lingered longer on the screen.

Of course, every nation frames its story.

But I had grown up believing the United States aspired to something sturdier in its journalism.

Sitting in that open room inside that exposed-structure building, the word “we” began to blur.

Who was “we” in these reports?
Whose losses counted?
Whose images were shown?
Whose were not?

It was sometime during the George W. Bush years, not long after the 2000 election and the strange, surreal drama in Florida that ended with Gore conceding. I had been in Paris when that election unfolded. Watching American politics from outside the country gave me a peculiar vantage point. The tone of the coverage. The distance. The conversations with journalists who were not performing for a domestic audience. It felt different. Less choreographed.

In Paris I spent time with a few American reporters. At one point I asked them a question that felt obvious to me: why weren’t they doing more? Why weren’t they pushing harder on what had happened? One of them, a reporter who worked for a major American paper, told me quietly that they were afraid for their jobs. This was before Jeff Bezos owned The Washington Post, before many of the media consolidations we now talk about so easily. But even then, the fear was present.

That conversation stayed with me.

Uncertainty settled in. Not anger. Not ideology. Just unease.

It was there that I listened to one of Al Gore’s 2004 lectures from UC Berkeley. His keynote that year at The New School was titled Fear: Political Uses and Abuses. His message was steady: pay attention. Educate yourself. Notice the expansion of executive power.

He asked audiences:

“Doesn’t this bother you?”

Yes.

It did.

🎭 III. A Small Theater of Understanding

When I returned to the Bay Area, I began listening to Robert Reich more closely.

His explanations did not feel like arguments. They felt like a small theater.

He would step forward.
He would place a structure on the stage.
Executive compensation.
Corporate boards.
Stock buybacks.
Lobbying pathways.
Incentives stacked carefully like scenery flats.

No shouting.
No thunder.

Just the patient unfolding of how the set had been built.

He spoke as if pulling back curtains rather than drawing charts. You could see where each beam connected. You could see who stood in the spotlight and who worked in the wings. It was not mathematics. It was staging.

When he launched Inequality for All, I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign. It felt modest at the time. A small vote for explanation.

Later, in the California Theatre on Kittredge Street, I sat among neighbors and strangers and watched the film. The room was not grand. The seats were worn in the way of honest places. The screen flickered, and the structure of the economy appeared as something almost physical. A stage set of incentives and outcomes.

When the credits rolled, my name appeared among hundreds of others.

A small line in a long list.

I felt proud.

Not because my name was there, but because it was one among many. It suggested that understanding was not a solo performance. It was something we sat inside together.

It felt like shared effort. Like understanding might gather slowly, person by person, and in time begin to press against the beams of the structure.

For a moment, it seemed possible that if enough of us stayed in our seats, if enough of us learned how the set had been arranged, we might eventually find a way to rearrange it ourselves.

The stage did not feel inevitable.

It felt constructed.

And what is constructed can be rebuilt.

Twenty years later, the issues remain. Corporate concentration has increased. Media ownership has narrowed. Economic inequality has widened.

The diagrams were clear.

The structure did not move.

I began tracing backward.

Media consolidation.
Rupert Murdoch.
William Randolph Hearst.
Private wealth and public authority intersecting.

Then further back.

“We the People…”

Who is “we”?

The Declaration speaks of “one people.”

Who are “the people”?

I remember standing beside my desk at six years old, hand over heart, believing those words described something solid and shared.

More than six decades later, I am still asking:

Where exactly am I standing?
And how did the familiar floor plan become unfamiliar?

It is an orientation.

An attempt to make the structure visible.
To trace the beams.
To steady the word “we.”

I. Eliza, 1872

In the autumn of 1872, Eliza Harwood signed the boarding ledger in Groveland with a firm, unadorned hand.

E. Harwood. Sacramento.

She traveled alone through Gold Country with the steady composure of someone who had already considered the risks and found them negotiable. One valise. One notebook. A habit of observing before speaking.

She had heard of the saloon with the iron door and went, as curious people do, toward whatever had managed to remain.

Inside, the room held lamplight the way a teacup holds heat. The boards were worn to a polite smoothness. Conversation paused long enough to register her presence and then resumed in a slightly more careful key.

She ordered whiskey.
Not from thirst. From practicality.

The iron door sat in the back wall, dark and embedded, a slab from some former mine safe dragged into town when the mine itself failed. Too heavy to waste. Too honest to disguise. In a place devoted to motion, it had chosen stillness.

Above the room hung a plow suspended from chains. No one seemed troubled by this. It hovered as if waiting for a field to materialize between the tables. Nearby, a long double-handled crosscut saw rested in the rafters. It swayed faintly when the front door opened, not enough to alarm, just enough to recommend thoughtful seating.

Eliza chose her chair with care.

From her notebook that evening:

The tools remain when the work is done.

A plow in the air. A saw above the bar. A door that once guarded gold now guards a room.

Objects possess more patience than people.

Miners spoke of claims with theological intensity. A gambler leaned into optimism. Someone laughed too loudly at something that was not entirely funny. Eliza wrote in the spaces between sound.

These towns arrive quickly and depart without ceremony.

The buildings attempt endurance.

The iron door will likely outlast us all.

She did not romanticize the place. She had seen camps dissolve into weeds and memory. But she felt a measured affection for the room. It was trying. Trying to hold itself together long enough to be called established.

When she stepped back into the Sierra night, the air smelled of pine and worked earth. The saloon glowed behind her like a coal that had decided not to cool.

She wrote one last line before sleeping:

The Iron Door promises no fortune.
It promises duration.

By morning she would continue on.
The door would remain.

II. Kimberly Twain, 2025

On my way back from Yosemite, I spotted the old saloon and executed a respectful U-turn. I love anything old, especially a dive bar that has survived several economic systems and at least one moral panic.

I used to live near The Little Shamrock, which claims to be the second oldest bar in San Francisco and still keeps a clock stopped at 5:12 a.m., the exact minute the 1906 earthquake said good morning. I also spent time at The Saloon, circa 1861, which insists it is the oldest bar in the city. California, perhaps. Depends who’s holding the tiara.

Then I walked into the Iron Door Saloon, which now claims to be the oldest bar in California.

These places compete like pageant contestants in boots. Oldest. Most continuous. Most historically hydrated.

Inside, the ceiling is layered with dollar bills in various stages of decomposition. Some are barely holding together. If they ever took them down, they could probably finance a respectable structural retrofit. I’ve heard of bars discovering thousands of dollars up there once gravity finally intervened. Not to even mention all the gold dust that remains in the floorboards.

Then I noticed the plow.

Suspended from the ceiling by chains that, from my vantage point, might as well have been threads. It hung there like agricultural watchman passing the time. Beneath it, patrons drank without visible concern, which is the kind of optimism that built the West.

And then there was the double handled saw.

Hanging directly above the bar.
Swinging.
Gently.
Suggestively.

I ordered a Jack and Coke and took a seat directly under it, because apparently I, too, enjoy historical immersion. For a moment I sat there contemplating my life choices while the saw performed a subtle pendulum act above my head.

I thought:
These miners took chances.
Why can’t I.

So I raised my drink in solidarity with 19th-century risk tolerance and sat there at the peril of my life for a full minute or two.

Then I moved two seats down.

Courage has limits.
So does my insurance coverage.

Murals stretch across the walls, painted by a local artist in exchange for drinks, which remains one of the more transparent economic systems in California. Heck, I even use it myself. Faded bills cling to the ceiling. The floorboards hold whatever gold has sifted into them over the last century and a half. Down the road sits the Mark Twain cabin site, because in California Twain is legally required to have passed through everywhere.

I imagined Eliza up at the boardinghouse in 1872, writing by lamplight after walking down from her rented room. A traveler passing through. A writer collecting atmospheres. Someone who noticed that buildings sometimes outlast the intentions that built them.

Two travelers.
One room.
A century and a half apart.

The titles may be debated. Oldest bar in California. Oldest continuous. Oldest surviving with intact ceiling hazards.

But some buildings are less interested in titles than in staying.

The Iron Door simply remains.

Cool. Steady. Entirely unconcerned with overhead hazards.
And still receiving visitors who wander in from the present and find themselves briefly seated inside the past.

The gold is gone.
The titles are disputed.
The saw still swings.
The plow still hovers.

The Iron Door no longer guards treasure.

It guards continuity and memory.

I recently visited Chicken Ranch Casino in Jamestown.

It’s a beautiful place. Slick. Polished. Fancy cocktails. Clean lighting. The kind of interior that makes you forget what the hills outside used to look like before highways and parking structures smoothed everything into accessibility.

Chicken Ranch is owned by the Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians of California. Jackson Rancheria, just up the road, is owned by the Jackson Band of Miwuk Indians. These are federally recognized tribal governments, operating on land held in trust.

Every time I go into one of these casinos in Gold Country, I find myself asking the same question:

Where are the Native Americans?

Not symbolically. Physically.

I see everyone else. Retirees. Tour buses. Weekend groups. Families. The gaming floor is busy, the parking lot full. Many of the dealers are friendly, efficient, professional. The workforce looks like California’s broader service economy.

But the people whose names are on the buildings.
Whose symbols are on the walls and carpets.
Whose ancestors lived on this land before gold turned the Sierra into a global extraction zone.

I don’t often see them in ways I can easily recognize.

I’ve had the same thought at Jackson Rancheria. At Black Oak. At Red Hawk. Different buildings. Same question hovering quietly over the slot machines.

Maybe they’re there and I simply don’t know who I’m looking at.
Maybe sovereignty doesn’t require visibility to outsiders.
Maybe I’m standing inside an economy that belongs to them, whether or not I can see that ownership on the floor.

Still, the contrast stays with me.

And with all this money made by the casinos, I remember once driving past a reservation not far from one of them. It was strikingly poor. Housing in rough condition. Infrastructure thin. A visible kind of hardship sitting almost in the shadow of a large, profitable gaming complex.

It made me wonder:

Why are these people suffering?
Why is any Native American community suffering when tribes are supposed to have sovereignty under U.S. treaties?

If the land is theirs.
If the casino is theirs.
If this is the long arc from dispossession to self-determination.

Then why does the prosperity feel so uneven?

I started wondering how certain tribes ended up owning land and casinos while others did not. The answer, it turns out, has less to do with luck than with paperwork and survival in two different worlds. Some Native communities managed to retain or later regain federal recognition and small parcels of land held in trust. Others were stripped of recognition during the mid-20th-century termination era or were never formally recognized at all, even though their people survived. Without federal recognition and trust land, a tribe cannot operate a casino under U.S. law. Survival on the ground didn’t always translate into survival on paper. And in this country, paper determines power.

How It Came to Be This Way

After the Gold Rush, Native communities in California were devastated. Violence. Disease. Forced labor. Entire villages erased. By the late 19th century, the population had plummeted.

What remained were small reservations, often on marginal land, with limited economic opportunity.

For most of the 20th century, tribes were restricted in how they could govern or profit from their own land. Federal policy swung between forced assimilation and neglect.

Then, in 1988, Congress passed a law allowing federally recognized tribes to operate gaming facilities on tribal land under certain conditions. The idea was rooted in tribal sovereignty: tribes are recognized as self-governing nations, and gaming became one of the few reliable economic tools available to them within U.S. law.

In California, that framework expanded after voter initiatives in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The result: tribal casinos.

Not state-owned.
Not privately owned in the usual sense.
Owned by tribes as sovereign entities.

But the reality is layered.

Many tribes partner with outside management companies.
Some take on enormous development loans.
Some share revenue directly with tribal members.
Some reinvest most of it into infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and education.
Some tribes have small memberships and very profitable casinos.
Others have larger populations and thinner margins.
Not every tribe has a casino.
Not every casino makes equal revenue.
And not every Native person belongs to a tribe that operates one.

So when I see poverty near a casino, it doesn’t automatically mean the revenue isn’t flowing. It may mean the revenue is stretched across generations of loss. Across housing shortages. Across healthcare needs. Across rebuilding what was systematically dismantled.

Sovereignty is real.

But sovereignty inside a federal framework is also constrained.

Is It a Trick?

Sometimes I wonder.

Is gaming simply another system where Native nations operate inside rules set by the same government that once sanctioned their destruction?

Casinos exist because federal law allows them.
They operate under compacts with the state.
They are heavily regulated.

This isn’t a return to pre-1848 autonomy.
It’s sovereignty negotiated inside the architecture of the United States.

So is it a trick?

Or is it one of the few tools available inside a system that was never designed to restore what was taken?

When I sit at a blackjack table in Jackson or Jamestown or Placerville, watching cards flip under bright lights, I’m aware that the wealth moving across the felt is different from the wealth that moved through these hills in 1849.

Back then, gold left.
Now, at least some of the revenue stays.

It may not erase poverty.
It may not fix 170 years of structural damage.
It may not look like restitution in the way we imagine restitution.

But it is not nothing.

And maybe the real discomfort I feel walking through these casinos isn’t that Native people aren’t visible to me.

Maybe it’s that I’m witnessing a complicated form of survival.

The Gold Rush created enormous wealth for people who arrived from somewhere else.

These casinos may be one of the few structures in Gold Country where some of that wealth has begun, however imperfectly, to circle back.

It doesn’t undo anything.

But it does make the present more complicated than the tourist brochures suggest.

And sometimes that complexity shows up as a beautiful casino on one side of the road and a struggling reservation on the other, both occupying the same history.

🧭 The Family Curriculum

I come from a long line of educators.

In our family, teaching was not a profession. It was a survival system. Near the turn of the twentieth century, my great-grandmother opened the first school for Black children in our small Louisiana town. My great-grandfather taught too. Family lore says he rode from place to place on horseback, carrying lessons across fields and dirt roads, teaching wherever children could gather. He did this at risk to his life. Education for Black people in the American South was not considered a neutral activity. It was considered a threat.

So education became our inheritance.

Black history was drilled into me at the dinner table and in living rooms long before I saw any of it in a textbook. My Aunt Julia Mae, herself a teacher, gave me a book of poetry by Paul Laurence Dunbar that I still keep. I attended segregated schools in the South, yet those schools bore the name of a relative. Inside those walls, we never felt lesser. Still, there was a quiet confusion. Why were we learning so much history at home that never appeared in our official curriculum? Why did the public textbooks suggest that my people entered the story only as enslaved labor and then slipped back into the margins?

As a child, I felt the unease of that absence. I sensed a limit on where I could move and what I could imagine. I worried that my people had done nothing but endure. Then my family handed me a different archive. They taught me about Black poets, teachers, organizers, rebels, and builders. They themselves marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. They told stories not printed in the schoolbooks we were issued. They placed art books and literature by Black writers and artists in my hands. We studied music and learned of Black musicians who forged their own paths despite the working conditions imposed by Jim Crow. They filled in the missing architecture of the past. The effect was structural. I did not feel erased, because they would not allow it.

For years, I wondered why I had received this parallel education, this quiet supplemental syllabus passed down through family memory.

Recently, I found one of its sources.
Freedom Schools.

🏫 The Summer Mississippi Built a Different Classroom

In 1964, during Freedom Summer, activists and local communities in Mississippi created a network of temporary schools for Black children and teenagers. The official school system in the state was segregated, underfunded for Black students, and tightly controlled in what it allowed them to learn about themselves and their rights. Many Black students attended schools that avoided or distorted Black history, civic participation, and the mechanics of voting.

The Freedom Schools were built to correct that omission.

They operated in churches, community centers, and borrowed rooms. Volunteer teachers and local leaders created a curriculum that centered Black history, constitutional rights, literature, and civic engagement. Students studied not only what democracy claimed to be but how it functioned in practice. They read, wrote, debated, and organized. They learned how to register to vote, how to speak publicly, and how to analyze the structures shaping their lives.

The goal was not remedial education.
The goal was civic presence.

Young people were encouraged to ask questions about power and belonging. They wrote essays about their communities and their futures. At the end of that summer, many students helped draft a document often referred to as the Declaration of Independence of the Negro People of Mississippi, a statement written by teenagers assessing the democracy around them and demanding fuller participation within it.

The schools lasted only one summer in their original form. Their influence did not end there.

🔥 A Lineage of Hidden Classrooms

The Freedom Schools did not appear out of nowhere. They emerged from a longer tradition of Black communities building their own educational systems when official ones excluded or diminished them. During slavery, people learned to read in secret. After the Civil War, Reconstruction-era schools were built by newly freed communities and often targeted for destruction. In the twentieth century, educators across the South and beyond carried knowledge from place to place, sometimes literally on horseback.

By 1964, the Freedom Schools became a visible expression of a long-standing practice: when formal curricula erase you, you build a supplemental one.

Their legacy can be traced through community-run schools, liberation schools, Black Panther educational programs, ethnic studies movements, and ongoing debates over whose history belongs in public classrooms. They were temporary structures with permanent consequences.

📍 The Secret Was Never Only Ours

Looking back, I understand that the education my family gave me was not unusual. It was part of a wider tradition. Many Black families maintained a parallel curriculum at home, teaching history, literature, and civic awareness absent from official textbooks. It was not secrecy for secrecy’s sake. It was continuity.

These are all variations on the same blueprint.

When a system narrows the story, people widen it. When textbooks omit, communities annotate. When official classrooms cannot hold the full record, someone opens another room.

Freedom Schools remind us that education is not confined to buildings or districts. It is a civic inheritance carried by families, communities, and teachers who refuse disappearance. Their classrooms may be temporary. Their lessons tend to travel.

I used to wonder why my family gave me a history lesson that felt almost like a secret.

It was not a secret.
It was a continuation.

On certain afternoons in Berkeley, if the fog behaves and the eucalyptus hold their perfume like seasoned actors, you can walk past the Greek Theatre and feel that the campus is quietly remembering things.

Not history in the textbook sense.
More like memory with architecture.

There is the Greek Theatre, funded by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, still open to the sky and whatever guitar happens to wander onto the stage. Above it sits Bowles Hall, a stone fortress gifted to the university in 1929 by a woman who apparently believed that students should live inside something that looked morally serious. Down the slope today, fencing creeps along sidewalks, roads close without apology, and cranes hover like long-necked birds waiting for instructions.

It is one hillside.
But it contains several species of wealth.

I walk this stretch often, and lately I have begun to suspect that the buildings are engaged in a quiet argument about what money is supposed to do once it becomes too large for its owner’s pockets.

🏛️🧱 The civic builder

Phoebe Hearst belonged to that robust class of donors who treated wealth as a responsibility rather than a personality. She did not fund institutions so they would repeat her opinions. She funded them so they would exist.

She built libraries, schools, university buildings, and a theater open to the public air. Once completed, these structures went about their business without consulting her. A century later, thousands of people sit in the Greek Theatre each year without the faintest curiosity about what Mrs. Hearst would have thought of the program.

That is the peculiar virtue of civic-minded philanthropy:
it creates something strong enough to forget you.

Bowles Hall, sitting uphill like a medieval conscience, reflects a similar instinct. It was built as a gift to the university, not as a personal megaphone. Students live there now with only a passing awareness of who paid for the stone. The building has successfully escaped its donor.

In our own time, the global supply-chain magnate Victor Fung has funded universities and research initiatives with a comparable sensibility. His philanthropy tends toward educational infrastructure and knowledge exchange rather than personal spotlight. He builds frameworks and then, admirably, refrains from hovering over them like a stage manager with opinions.

These donors appear to share a radical thought:
Perhaps the point of giving is not to remain visible afterward.

🎙️📰 The narrative age

Our present era, however, has developed a fondness for donors who prefer not to exit the stage.

Some of today’s wealthiest figures operate not only as philanthropists but as proprietors of the channels through which public life is narrated. Jeff Bezos owns a newspaper. Rupert Murdoch owns enough of them to start a small weather system. Both have given money to various causes. Yet their most consequential acts of generosity sit comfortably alongside ownership of platforms that shape what the public knows and how it knows it.

There is a difference between endowing a library and owning the printing press inside it.
One invites voices.
The other curates them.

This is not a tidy morality play. Earlier philanthropists were not saints, and modern billionaires are not required to wear villain capes. But the architecture of influence has shifted. Wealth that once sought legitimacy by building shared civic space now often seeks it by shaping the story of that space.

One builds the amphitheater.
The other owns the microphone and the lighting grid.

🌩️💰 The psychological weather of great wealth

Extreme wealth produces a certain atmospheric condition around the person who possesses it. Doors open. Disagreement thins out. People nod. Over time, it becomes possible to conclude that one’s judgment is not merely strong but historically necessary.

Earlier generations of donors operated within a social expectation that visible contributions to public life mattered. If you had made a fortune, you were expected to leave behind a library, a school, a park, or at the very least a respectable fountain. Wealth required architecture.

Today’s fortunes are more mobile and less attached to place. They drift across global markets and digital networks. And when wealth is not anchored to a particular city, the urge to build something that belongs entirely to that city can weaken. The urge to influence how the city understands itself can grow stronger.

The result is a new philanthropic posture:
generous, certainly — but seated comfortably near the controls.

🚶🏾‍♀️⛰️ A walk uphill

Walk up Gayley Road now and you can feel these philosophies sharing a narrow stretch of pavement. Bowles Hall continues to loom with medieval composure. The Greek Theatre continues to host concerts without consulting any donor’s editorial preferences. Across the street, new construction advances in phases funded by modern campaigns, global capital, and institutional borrowing.

Universities have always relied on private wealth. That is not new. What has changed is the donor’s relationship to visibility.

Does the donor build something and step back?
Or build something and remain in the control room?

The earlier model leaned toward disappearance. The newer one sometimes leans toward permanent presence. Both will continue. But the balance between them will shape the cultural life of our institutions.

📜🏛️ A modest civic request

The Berkeley hillside offers a quiet demonstration of what happens when philanthropy ages well. The Greek Theatre still belongs to everyone. Bowles Hall houses students who may never know who funded its stone. This is not a failure of memory. It is a triumph of public life.

To build something that eventually forgets you is a rare civic grace.

As cranes rise and institutions negotiate with modern wealth, one hopes for a revival of that grace. Not nostalgia. Just restraint. A willingness to fund culture without narrating it.

Build the theater.
Fund the studio.
Endow the library.

Then resist the temptation to sit on the throne you just paid for.

The hillside above the Greek Theatre still has room for benefactors.
What it needs are donors who can bear the almost unbearable act of building something and then allowing it to belong to everyone else.

By the early 1850s, while San Francisco was busy turning gold into chandeliers and oysters, the rush pressed north into the river cuts and oak-scraped hills around Shasta.

This was not flashy country. It did not glitter on command. The gold here preferred to sulk. It buried itself in gravels, slipped into deep channels, and lodged inside bends of water that required persuasion, profanity, and occasionally explosives.

If San Francisco sold the dream, Shasta unpacked it in mud.

Shasta was less a boomtown than a supply nerve, sitting inland from the Sacramento River like a clenched fist. Freight wagons arrived groaning. Mule trains departed hopeful. Somewhere in between, whiskey was poured, contracts were murmured, and expectations were quietly revised.

Water as Destiny

In the northern fields, gold was married to water, and the marriage was practical, not affectionate.

Creeks like Clear Creek and the upper Sacramento decided everything: where men stood, when they stood there, and whether they would still be standing by winter. Water was boss, calendar, and executioner.

Placer mining came first, all pans and optimism. Then sluices. Then long toms. Then the hydraulic cannon, which announced that subtlety had officially retired.

Hillsides were peeled back like stubborn envelopes. Ditches ran for miles. Flumes stitched ravines together in improbable wooden lines that looked less like engineering and more like arguments with gravity. Gravity, for its part, showed up every morning and clocked in as foreman.

The north did not reward patience. It rewarded leverage.

And the Culture Came With It

Gold did not travel alone.

Where miners went, bars followed. Where bars settled, brothels took a room nearby and improved it.

By the time the diggings pushed north toward Whiskeytown and beyond, the social architecture of the Gold Rush had already formed its habits. A town might begin with tents and pans, but it did not feel complete until:

• a bar fronted the main street

• a boardinghouse doubled as a discreet enterprise

• lace appeared in a window one block off the dust

Bars were loud, horizontal, and visible. They declared themselves to the street.

Brothels were quieter, layered, and deliberate. They declared themselves by invitation.

In this hard country of gravel and hydraulic force, something softer but no less powerful took root: a culture of quiet feminine authority.

Women did not dominate the street. They did not need to. They controlled the interiors.

Inside those houses:

• time slowed

• rules were enforced

• money was counted carefully

• information was gathered without fanfare

A miner might pound a hillside all day and lose himself at a bar by dusk. But when he crossed a threshold and climbed a staircase, the terms shifted. The noise fell away. Negotiation replaced bravado.

In a land obsessed with extraction, women practiced calibration.

It was not theatrical power. It was not shouted. It was measured in:

• rent paid on time

• fines settled promptly

• rooms kept orderly

• accounts balanced

If the hills were being dismantled by hydraulic force, the interiors of northern towns were being organized by women who understood that stability, not spectacle, outlasts the strike.

Whiskeytown and the Aftertaste of Gold

The name does not mislead. Whiskeytown was loud, combustible, and allergic to permanence. A good strike could make a man eloquent by dusk and bankrupt by dawn. A bad winter could finish what exhaustion had already drafted.

Bars were not diversions. They were climate control. Warmth, rumor, negotiation, and temporary courage were all dispensed over scarred counters. News traveled faster across a bar than across a claim. A miner might spend three weeks moving gravel and three minutes losing the proceeds.

Many left poorer than they arrived, carrying less gold than regret, and sometimes more stories than either.

A Quieter Brutality

The northern fields rarely posed for romance. This was arithmetic country.

How much gravel.
How much water.
How many trees.
How many bodies.

Indigenous communities paid first and longest. Rivers clouded. Fisheries collapsed. Homeland became “resource” with brisk administrative confidence. The violence was not always dramatic, but it was thorough.

And yet within that upheaval, there were interiors where some measure of order was imposed. Not justice, perhaps. But structure.

What Remains

Today the hills around Shasta look composed. Oaks scatter politely across golden slopes. The air carries birdsong instead of blasting powder.

But dry ditches still score the earth in straight, stubborn lines. Tailings sit like low punctuation marks across the land. The rearrangement remains visible to anyone willing to read it.

So does the quieter legacy.

The Northern Gold Fields were never only about striking it rich. They were about discovering how much force a landscape could endure, and how much instability a town could survive.

The men moved earth.

The women, more often than not, steadied what was built upon it.

I have come to think of civics as the study of how people agree to live together under power.

That is all. No flags required. You may bring one if it improves morale, but structurally speaking it is optional.

Civics is not a belief system. It will not diagnose your personality. It does not assign you to a team or issue you a cape. Civics is operating knowledge of a shared structure: the rules of occupancy, the limits of authority, and the obligations that come with living in a building where everyone insists they are in charge of the thermostat.

If politics is the argument, civics is the room in which the argument takes place.
Most of us were handed the argument and never shown the room. We were told to pick a side and raise our voices inside a structure whose exits had not been clearly marked.

For most of my life I thought this was normal. Then the volume went up.

What pushed me toward civics was not a classroom. It was the sound of relationships snapping like overcooked spaghetti.

Friendships went first. People who had shared meals, stages, car rides, and borrowed money began speaking to one another as if they were rival nations. Messages arrived with the emotional restraint of a marching band. People unfriended, denounced, resigned, blocked, and issued final judgments based on something half-heard, misheard, or enthusiastically imagined.

Then I saw it happen in families. Which is impressive, because families have historically survived wars, relocations, questionable haircuts, and fruitcake. Siblings stopped speaking. Parents and adult children developed separate informational ecosystems. Holiday dinners became quiet diplomatic summits where everyone passed the gravy but not the topic.

Disagreement stopped sounding like disagreement and started sounding like expulsion.
The ability to argue and then refill someone’s glass appeared to have been discontinued.

At some point I found myself asking a modest question:
How did we lose the ability to argue and still sit in the same room without issuing a formal statement?

That question led me, somewhat suspiciously, to civics.

Because underneath the shouting I sensed something missing. Not agreement. Agreement is rare and often overrated. Something more basic. A shared understanding of what we are doing when we disagree. A shared set of rules about how people with different views remain part of the same public and, ideally, the same dinner party.

I began to wonder whether civics was even being taught anymore. Not in graduate school. In K–12. Where does it live? Is it stored in a filing cabinet labeled “Important but Not Urgent”? Does it come out between standardized tests and fire drills? Who explains how a pluralistic society manages to remain plural without installing seatbelts on every conversation?

When I was a young girl in Louisiana, before my family moved to California, I remember looking forward to ninth grade because there were required courses in civics and ethics. I wanted them. Even then I was trying to reconcile the language of liberty with the historical record. I had noticed that the national motto and the national behavior were not always on speaking terms. You know the chapter. The slavery chapter. I assumed there would be a course where someone walked us through how a country says one thing and does another without the whole structure collapsing from embarrassment.

Then we moved.

In California, the civics and ethics sequence I had been anticipating dissolved into a broader category called “social studies,” which is a bit like labeling a toolbox “miscellaneous.” Civics was present, but in trace amounts. Around the same time, a teacher kindly suggested that I retire my habit of addressing adults with “yes ma’am” and “no sir.” It would make me stand out. It might invite teasing. The advice was practical and well-meant, but it left me with the sense that one set of social rules had been quietly retired without a new manual being issued.

Years later, during a particularly energetic period of public outrage, those memories returned. I began to notice how quickly disagreement now escalated into moral sentencing, and how little shared ground remained for navigating conflict without severing ties entirely.

It began to feel less like a political problem and more like a civic one.

We have always had strong opinions. That is not new. Humans have been disagreeing since the invention of language and possibly before. What feels new is the absence of a shared understanding of how disagreement is supposed to function inside a republic. How far it can go before it breaks the container holding us all together like passengers arguing over the steering wheel of a moving vehicle.

Civics, I eventually realized, is not about forcing agreement.
It is about making disagreement survivable.

Most of us were taught politics without civics. We were shown elections, leaders, debates, and dramatic music but not the underlying architecture that gives any of it meaning. We were asked to care deeply about outcomes we were never taught to interpret. We were handed a scoreboard without the rulebook.

So I began asking the questions politics prefers not to answer:

Who is actually allowed to do what, and why?
Which powers are real, and which are theatrical props with good lighting?
What happens when norms collapse but laws remain standing like furniture after a party?
What does an ordinary citizen do after the vote is cast and the yard signs have been recycled into something decorative?

Without those answers, public life starts to feel like superstition. People argue over personalities while ignoring structures. Outrage replaces agency. Participation begins to resemble performance art with a very large audience and no intermission.

In a functioning republic, civics is boring on purpose.
Procedural. Slow. Repetitive. About as glamorous as plumbing and roughly as important.

It exists to prevent excitement from becoming authority.
Which is unfortunate, because excitement has excellent public relations.

That, I suspect, is why civics fades from view. Civics does not flatter. It does not promise transformation by Tuesday. It does not provide villains simple enough to boo on cue. It insists on limits. And limits rarely trend.

The more I studied, the more I saw that civics quietly teaches things we are not always eager to hear: no office is all-powerful, no leader singular, no emergency a permanent suspension of responsibility. Power is fragmented by design. Inefficiency can be a safety feature. And the most dangerous sentence in public life may be “Someone should do something,” when no one can identify who that someone is or where they keep the tools.

This book is my attempt to go back and learn what many of us were only partially taught, or taught once and then left to misplace under a stack of headlines.

Not to tell you what to think.
To ask how we live together under power without setting the furniture on fire.

To ask how disagreement can remain disagreement rather than exile.
How argument can remain argument rather than rupture.
How a public, and even a family, can remain intact while still containing difference and the occasional eye roll.

Because before a republic can be repaired, it has to be understood.

And understanding, inconvenient though it may be, is the first civic act I know how to take.

I have been trying to locate democracy.

Not on a map.
On the premises.

Because if I am living somewhere between autocracy’s velvet rope and oligarchy’s private elevator, I would like to know where democracy parked itself and whether it ever had a lease.

This inquiry began in first grade.

Hand over heart. Morning light through classroom windows. Thirty small citizens in formation. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance with the ceremonial gravity of people still learning to tie their shoes.

“And to the republic for which it stands…”

Even then, a small internal auditor woke up.

Republic?
Not democracy?

And here’s the part that made the words stick in my throat like chalk dust.

The child reciting them was a descendant of enslaved people.

Which meant that even at seven years old, without footnotes or archival training, there was a question hovering in the air like a ceiling fan: how do you pledge allegiance to a republic that once classified your ancestors as property? How do you say democracy with a straight face in a nation that began with chattel slavery written into its economic foundation?

George Washington appears in textbooks as a founding father. He also appears in ledgers as a slaveholder. Both facts occupy the same page, though not always with equal font size.

Try explaining that to a child whose family history sits on the other side of the transaction.

The words didn’t quite fit.
They were tailored for someone else.
They were ceremonial clothing handed down through a family that had not always been invited inside the house.

It wasn’t quite skippy.

🏛️ The Fine Print Under the Flag

The United States was designed as a republic. A representative system. A structure meant to temper direct rule by the crowd. The founders, wary of mob passions, installed layers between the public and power. Filters. Mechanisms. Distance.

But those layers also protected inequities baked into the original build.

At the founding, democracy was selective.
Voting was limited.
Citizenship was uneven.
Human beings were bought and sold.

So when we ask whether the United States was ever a democracy, the answer depends heavily on who is doing the asking and from which side of history’s ledger.

For some, the system worked from the start.
For others, the system worked on them.

🪑 Renovations, Slow and Uneven

Over time, democracy expanded like a house under perpetual renovation. Amendments were added. Rights extended. Barriers challenged. Each generation pushed the structure closer to its stated ideals.

But progress came in installments.
And installments sometimes defaulted.

The descendants of enslaved people did not enter the democratic promise all at once. They were ushered in gradually, often through struggle, often through blood, often through the stubborn insistence that the words on paper apply to everyone whose hands helped build the place.

So that first-grade moment wasn’t just semantic curiosity. It was historical dissonance.

A child saying “republic” while standing inside a lineage that had once been excluded from both republic and democracy entirely.

🪙 Meanwhile, Upstairs

While rights expanded outward, wealth consolidated upward. This has always been part of the American architecture. Landowners, industrialists, financiers, tech magnates. Different centuries, same gravitational pull.

Democracy widened.
Oligarchy deepened.

The result is a system that has always been a hybrid. A republic with democratic ambitions. A democracy with oligarchic tendencies. A nation capable of extraordinary civic ideals and equally extraordinary contradictions.

Add in moments when strongman leadership flirts with centralizing power, and you get the current atmosphere: not full autocracy, not pure oligarchy, not fully realized democracy. A layered structure with competing blueprints.

🧭 Back to the Classroom

Picture that child again.

Hand over heart. Saying words that felt slightly misaligned with inherited reality. Not yet equipped with historical vocabulary, but already aware that the promise and the practice did not match perfectly.

Children notice when language and lived experience diverge. They feel it in the rhythm of the sentence. In the pause between words.

Republic.
Liberty.
Justice for all.

For all?

The question hung there, quiet but persistent, like a loose floorboard in a house everyone pretends is finished.

🪟 So Where Did Democracy Go?

Perhaps it didn’t go anywhere.
Perhaps it has always been an aspiration under construction.
A system that functions only when people insist on expanding it. Maintaining it. Repairing it.

For descendants of enslaved people, democracy has often been less a birthright than a reclamation project. Something pursued, defended, demanded, and renegotiated across generations.

Which brings us back to the present.

If I am standing in a republic that has never fully resolved its founding contradictions, and if oligarchic wealth and centralized authority are both testing the load-bearing walls…

Then the question is not just where democracy went.

The question is whether it has ever been fully installed, or whether it remains a room still being built by people who were not included in the original blueprint.

So I ask again, with hand still metaphorically over heart:

Where the hell am I standing?

And who, exactly, is allowed to call this place a democracy without irony?

PREFACE

Why the Building Feels Unfamiliar

Civics, as it turns out, is a lot like my house.

I live in Crockett in a 1912 Craftsman that has seen better carpenters and, if we’re honest, better centuries. It sits across the street from the former home of John Muir’s father-in-law, which stands upright with the composure of a man who still reads the paper at breakfast. My house stands too, but with more personality than posture.

The front steps lean decisively to the right. Not politically. Structurally.
Doors open when they feel like it.
The ground has begun a slow and thoughtful migration toward the neighbor’s 1894 place.
The squirrels have unionized in the scuppers.

One of them, Twitcy, greets me every morning as I sit on the porch with coffee and look out at the rolling green hills. From the bedroom window we watch ships move through the strait and squirrels crack walnuts on the roof like tiny percussionists with no respect for sleeping hours. We watch them. They watch us. We have reached an understanding that is not, strictly speaking, in writing.

And yet we love this house.
The lines are good.
The bones are old growth.
The bay windows run floor to ceiling.
From one room we see cows grazing on a green hillside. From another we look across to the Stetzel house and the history of Valona. Every home on this street is from the same period. They are all still here. Weathered. Slightly crooked. Entirely alive.

But after ten years inside this structure, I know something is off.

Two outbuildings on the property have already surrendered to gravity and memory. An ivy-covered cottage lost its chimney in a winter storm and now hosts a raccoon family. The mother limps. We call her Limpy, though she has never introduced herself formally. An old stable where work horses once hauled goods up the hill is collapsing board by board. I watch it from the kitchen window while making toast and think, not about raccoons or horses, but about the United States government.

This is not as strange as it sounds.

Most Americans sense that something is wrong with their government but cannot quite name what it is. They feel it the way one feels a draft in an old house. The windows look fine. The walls appear upright. The roof has not yet departed. And yet something rattles. Something shifts. Something no longer fits the way it once did.

The usual explanation is that citizens have stopped caring about democracy.

I suspect the opposite.
I suspect they were never handed the floor plan.

Civics was once the practical knowledge required to live inside a republic without setting it on fire accidentally. Not patriotism. Not enthusiasm. Not a collection of decorative dates. Just the basics. Who holds power. Who limits it. Where it begins. Where it is supposed to end. And what the rest of us are meant to do when it wanders off unsupervised.

Over time, civics was trimmed down to trivia. A branch here. A slogan there. A respectful nod to a flag somewhere in the background. The structure itself became decorative, like those classical columns added to modern buildings that hold up absolutely nothing but still look reassuring in photographs.

Meanwhile, the building kept changing.

New wiring appeared. Old load-bearing beams were quietly removed. Side doors became main entrances. Entire rooms were repurposed without telling the tenants. Citizens were informed, politely, that the renovations were complex and best left to professionals.

This book is not interested in how government feels.
It is interested in how it is built.

It is for anyone who suspects that power has grown louder, less accountable, and more abstract and would like to know where the beams actually are. Which walls are structural. Which are decorative. Which cracks are cosmetic. Which ones mean you should probably call someone before the ceiling joins you for dinner.

You do not need to love politics to read this book.
You only need to live here.

Because a republic, like an old house, can stand for a very long time while quietly coming apart.

And because before anything can be repaired, someone has to walk through the place with the lights on and admit, kindly but plainly, where the floor has started to slope.

Consider this book that walk-through.

The closing of a college is often described as a financial event. A balance-sheet failure. A market correction.

But when the institutions unraveling are more than a century old, central to women’s education, and built explicitly to house serious arts education, what is being dismantled is not simply an organization, but a philosophy.

Quietly, almost politely, the Bay Area has begun to dismantle the architecture that once sustained artists’ artistic and intellectual lives, particularly those built to protect women’s access to serious education. Much of that architecture existed to treat the arts as a rigorous, lifelong pursuit — not as enrichment, but as vocation.

California College of the Arts, founded in 1907 as the California College of Arts and Crafts, has announced it will conclude operations at the end of the 2026–27 academic year, with its San Francisco campus transitioning to Vanderbilt University. Mills College ceased to exist as an independent women’s college when it merged into Northeastern University in 2022. And the San Francisco Art Institute closed in 2022, entering Chapter 7 bankruptcy the following year.

Each outcome differs in form. The result is the same.

Institutions that once treated the arts and women’s education as civic responsibilities are being absorbed, rebranded, or dissolved. What is lost is not only schools, but protected spaces where artists and students were encouraged to think critically, make courageously, and imagine alternatives to inherited systems.

Architecture as a Moral Statement

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, women’s education in California was not imagined as provisional. It was designed in stone, timber, and reinforced concrete, meant to last.

Few figures understood this better than Phoebe Apperson Hearst, one of the most consequential patrons of women’s education in American history. Hearst believed education was a public obligation and that architecture itself was a form of social policy. She funded institutions not to extract value, but to generate it across generations.

Her most enduring legacy may be her mentorship of Julia Morgan, the first woman licensed as an architect in California and one of the most prolific architects in American history.

Morgan did not design women’s educational spaces as diminished versions of men’s institutions, nor did she treat the arts as ornamental. She designed places where women — as artists and thinkers — could study, make, and work seriously, with the arts at the center of intellectual life rather than at its margins. Her buildings assumed continuity. They assumed women’s intellectual lives deserved permanence.

Architecture, in this context, was not decoration. It was a declaration.

Mills College: Six Buildings, One Integrated Vision

Founded in 1852, Mills College embodied that long view. Its campus was deliberately shaped over decades, including six major buildings designed by Julia Morgan, forming one of the most significant concentrations of her educational work.

These included El Campanil, whose survival of the 1906 earthquake helped establish Morgan’s reputation; the Margaret Carnegie Library; the Student Union; Kapiolani Cottage; the original gymnasium and pool; and Ming Quong, later renamed the Julia Morgan School for Girls. Together, these structures organized daily life: study, gathering, movement, and making.

At Mills, the arts were not extracurricular; they were structural, embedded in the daily rhythms of women’s intellectual life and open to artists and scholars more broadly. This was education understood as permanent civic infrastructure.

The merger that ended Mills’ independence did not erase these buildings. But without the institution they were designed to support, they risk becoming shells divorced from purpose, their meaning flattened into real estate.

That is not preservation.
It is hollowing.

From Fire to Continuity

My education at the California College of Arts and Crafts taught me how to question, disrupt, and act. Mills College taught me how to sustain that work over time.

Where CCAC was combustible, Mills was continuous. Where CCAC pushed outward, Mills held steady. Together, they formed a complete education in risk and responsibility, experimentation and endurance.

The loss of one would have been devastating.

The loss of both is a cultural severing.

Personal Witness: California College of Arts and Crafts

When I arrived at CCAC, it was an intact institution. Demanding. Serious. Alive with argument.

Craft mattered there. We fought to keep the “C” in the name because it stood for something older than branding: the belief that making was a form of thinking, and that the hand was an instrument of knowledge. For many of us — artists of all genders, and especially women — the arts were not a fallback but a way into authority, authorship, and professional life.

We argued over curriculum. We challenged language. We were taught to fail boldly, to think globally, and to understand architecture and art as ethical acts. The world came to us — not as spectacle, but as conversation.

Slowly, though, something shifted. Memory thinned. Language changed. Craft gave way to scale.

Then the “C” disappeared.

Now the institution itself is winding down, its campus transitioning to Vanderbilt.

Personal Witness: Mills College

I came to Mills at a moment when it still felt whole.

From the first Julia Morgan building at the gate, the campus announced itself as a place built for women’s seriousness. Later, as an MFA student, I was taught and mentored by women who treated writing as a long practice, not a commodity. We learned patience. Endurance. How to carry work across years.

I heard rumors of mismanagement at Mills and believed them. That explanation felt sufficient at the time.

Then the San Francisco Art Institute closed.

Then Mills lost its independence.

When CCA announced it would wind down entirely, I became alarmed. The sequence mattered. One institution could falter. Two, perhaps. Three, in quick succession, with different boards and leaders, began to look like something else.

Money, Management, and the Pattern

It would be dishonest to pretend that money and management had nothing to do with these closures. Of course they did. Decisions about tuition, enrollment, expansion, debt, and the quiet hope that real estate might someday rescue the balance sheet shaped what happened at CCA, Mills, and SFAI.

But taken one by one, those explanations feel plausible.
Taken together, they feel insufficient.

These were different institutions, with different leaders and internal cultures, yet they fell in sequence, one after another. It strains belief to conclude that all three simply made the same mistakes at the same time.

What begins to emerge instead is a larger shift in the ground beneath them.

These schools were built for a world in which the arts — particularly as a mode of women’s education — were treated as civic responsibilities, not consumer products. As higher education has been remade into a marketplace, institutions devoted to slowness, craft, and intellectual refuge have found themselves playing a game whose rules were never written for them.

Management mattered.
But the rules changed first.

What Should Happen Next

What should happen next is not another quiet transition or rebrand, but a reckoning.

Arts education — and the institutions that have historically protected women’s intellectual life within it — must be treated as civic infrastructure, not market experiments. That means public investment, philanthropic recommitment, and governance models that prioritize educational mission over scale, real estate, or brand expansion.

It also means pausing before assuming that consolidation equals preservation. A campus can survive on paper while its purpose quietly disappears.

If California wishes to remain a place where culture is produced rather than merely consumed, it must decide whether artists and thinkers are a public good — or an expendable luxury.

When Institutions Stop Teaching Courage

Institutions do not only transmit knowledge.
They transmit permission.

When institutions stop teaching courage, they transmit submission. Thinking becomes managerial, risk-averse, detached from the hand and the body.

I resist this deliberately. I slow down. I write by hand. I remember that the hand can still draw, sketch, and imagine directly from human thought.

This is not nostalgia.
It is cognition.

History shows what follows when art is marginalized and the feminine is suppressed. Societies describe it as efficiency or discipline. Creativity is tolerated only when it serves power. Education shifts from inquiry to compliance.

When artists lose access to serious arts education — and when women lose protected access to it altogether — society does not simply lose artists. It loses entire ways of thinking, questioning, and dissenting.

The Bay Area once built institutions that understood this danger. It built places where art mattered, where women’s intellectual lives were central, and where courage was taught through practice.

Those places are disappearing.

A society that stops teaching courage should not be surprised when imagination disappears and power goes unquestioned.

The story begins, as many Gold Rush stories do, in a bar.
Or at least, above one.

When I visited Placerville this past weekend, I checked into the Cary House Hotel — that brick-and-mortar relic of stagecoaches, whisky breath, scandalous whispers, and the stubborn endurance of frontier architecture. Mark Twain slept here. So did Lola Montez. The building is a palimpsest of the early West, a structure that has seen miners stagger through its doorways and ladies of the evening glide down its staircases.

I approached the front desk expecting the usual check-in pleasantries. Instead, I found the first thread of a story we rarely pull.

Her name was Clarisa (I hope I’ve spelled it right), a young woman with the kind of calm Placerville confidence you only get by being born into the bedrock of the place. We chatted the way travelers and locals sometimes do, finding the seams between curiosity and hospitality. And then she said it — off-hand, like it was nothing at all:

“I was born here. My family is Cornish. Descendants of the miners.”

I stopped mid-sentence.
The hallway, the old wallpaper, the ghosted remnants of the 1860s seemed to lean in.

“You’re Cornish?” I asked. “As in the Cornish miners? The Empire Mine Cornish?”

She nodded.

That was all I needed.

“I’ve been looking for someone to talk to about that,” I blurted out. “I was shocked — horrified — when I visited the Empire Mine and realized how the Cornish were treated. They were basically indentured. We never hear their story. I want to tell it.”

Clarisa nodded again, more slowly this time, with the quiet recognition of someone who has lived inside a truth history refuses to print.

A Hidden People in a Boomtown Story

California textbooks love to make the Gold Rush look like an equitable carnival of global fortune-seekers — Mexicans, Chinese, Germans, Frenchmen, Chileans, Australians, and Americans from every corner of the states. The Cornish, if they appear at all, are usually described as “skilled hard-rock miners,” then swiftly erased back into the tunnels.

But the real story is darker, and older.

The Cornish arrived not as gold-hungry adventurers but as workers — imported expertise. They were the world’s best at getting ore out of unforgiving stone, and California’s mine owners knew it. The state needed deep-mining specialists to keep their massive operations profitable, and the Cornish were already conditioned to do brutal underground work. Generations of them had mined the collapsing tin veins of Cornwall, which the British aristocracy had drained for centuries.

So they came — not for riches, but for wages.

Wages controlled, manipulated, and often withheld by mining companies who owned everything:
the housing, the stores, the equipment, even the air the men breathed underground.

If that sounds familiar, it should.

This was not chattel slavery. But it was also not freedom.
It was the architecture of industrial bondage — a capitalism so lopsided it might as well have been a cage.

Life Underground: The Cost of Expertise

The Cornish were paid for their skill, yes, but they were paid within a system designed to keep them dependent:

• Company scrip instead of real money.

• Company stores where prices were inflated.

• Company housing that could be revoked at any sign of dissent.

• Debt cycles that kept entire families bound to the mines.

• Dangerous shafts where men worked in temperatures over 100°F, for 10–12 hours at a time.

• Silicosis, “miner’s consumption,” that filled the graveyards with men under fifty.

Their work built California’s fortunes.
Their names barely made it into the ledger.

And while the Gold Rush era is famous for saloons and brothels — the public-facing architecture of vice — the Cornish miners were rarely the ones filling those barstools or brothel rooms. Their wages didn’t stretch that far. Their lives were not the glamorous vice-soaked stories of gamblers and gunfighters. Their revelry was smaller, quieter, exhausted. Their evenings belonged not to dance halls but to survival.

If anything, they were the silent machinery beneath the barroom floorboards — the human engines powering the nightlife above them.

Cary House: Above the Tunnels, Beside the Ghosts

Standing in the Cary House, talking to Clarisa, I realized I was standing on the surface of a story buried so deep it had to be mined out. The hotel itself operated at the crossroads of two worlds:

• Above ground: whiskey, laughter, piano music, the glint of gilt mirrors, boots on polished floors, women in silk moving like flickers of lanternlight.

• Below ground: Cornish men descending into the earth, their hands leathered, lungs scorched, dreams small and pressed-flat.

Victorian brothels and Gold Rush saloons took the gold; the Cornish dug it.

The architecture tells you everything if you know how to read it.
The grand staircases, the thick brick walls, the imported chandeliers — all of them were built on the backs of underground laborers who seldom saw the inside of such opulence.

California’s early prosperity was an upstairs/downstairs world, but with a literal downstairs:
a vertical class divide carved into the mountain itself.

And up on that mountain, sitting at the front desk of a historic hotel, was a young woman quietly carrying the history of those men — men who lived and died without their story ever properly told.

Why Their Story Matters Now

The Cornish miners were not enslaved in the legal sense, but the mine owners engineered a system that trapped an entire ethnic group in cycles of risk, labor, and debt.

This matters because the Gold Rush is too often flattened into a romance — all gold pans and piano girls in red satin. But beneath the red satin was a workforce treated as disposable. And beneath the workforce were generations of Cornish families whose cultural memory is still shaped by that era.

Clarisa’s family is part of that memory.
So is Placerville.
So is every historic saloon and brothel in the Sierra foothills.

The bars tell the story of pleasure.
The brothels tell the story of survival.
But the mines tell the story of sacrifice — and the Cornish are the chapter we forgot to bind into the book.

A Story Waiting to Be Raised From the Depths

As Clarisa handed me my room key, the conversation lingered in the air between us — a modern descendant and an accidental historian meeting at the threshold of a forgotten past.

I told her, with all the sincerity that moment deserved:

“I want to tell their story. People need to know.”

And she smiled the kind of smile that says she already knew that too.

Because every mining town has ghosts.
But it also has descendants.
And sometimes, if you’re lucky, the descendants are standing right at the front desk waiting to hand you the next chapter.

A Note from the Road

Hello, Citizens of Twain.

Apologies for being briefly MIA. I’ve been on the road, trying to follow the adventurous footsteps of Mark Twain himself. I took Highway 49 and did my best to imagine what this country felt like in 1849, and later when Twain passed through. It’s not easy, with freeways slicing through the hills like afterthoughts.

We stopped at several places he must have known. His cabin is still up here, outside Mariposa. There are a few surviving old-time bars that have been operating since those early days, their names and timbers stubbornly intact. But they now sit surrounded by gas stations, housing developments, and big-box stores. It’s hard to erase all of that from your mind long enough to see a miner, his mule, and the weight of his gear moving slowly through the dust.

Nearby are modern casinos, built on Native American land, operating under a different set of rules than the towns around them. Places like Chicken Ranch, where you can gamble and drink all night but are not allowed to sleep in your car afterward. That part feels… new. And strange.

There are no Gold Rush–era brothels left here. The wild, unruly West has been edited, regulated, and repackaged, often onto the very land that was taken first.

It makes you wonder what happened to the wild world that once was, and what replaced it instead.

The refrain keeps looping in my head like an old television echo:
Back in the day when girls were girls and men were men…
And history, as always, was a little messier than the song suggests.

If you ever want to watch a grown architect weep, tell them you’ve landed a commission that is:
(1) unlimited budget,
(2) unlimited scale,
(3) unlimited speed, and
(4) entirely controlled by a government that does not tolerate witnesses, criticism, or the wrong shade of beige on a cladding mock-up.

They will pack their bags before you finish the sentence.

Thus begins the tale of how the Chinese Communist Party discovered the architectural profession’s greatest weakness:
moral flexibility in the presence of a large check.

I. The Party Discovers Its New Favorite Pet: The Starchitect

Some governments adopt national animals.
China adopted Zaha Hadid.

There she is, parametric queen of curvature, bending Guangzhou like a gymnast with an unlimited yoga budget. The Party adored her. Never had authoritarianism looked so fluid. So feminine. So Instagrammable.

Suddenly every Politburo meeting included the phrase,
“Get me a Zaha curve, but make it patriotic.”

And Zaha delivered, blissfully unaware that she’d become the unofficial Minister of Futurist Appearances.

II. The Bird’s Nest: A Stadium, a Political Performance, and One Accidental Dissident

Enter Herzog & de Meuron and their sidekick Ai Weiwei, who at the time was still allowed to leave his house.

They built a stadium that looked like a basket for holding the world’s largest propaganda egg. Newspapers raved. Journalists swooned. The Party glowed with pride.

Then Ai Weiwei opened his mouth.

You have not truly lived until you’ve seen a regime beam with joy at a building and simultaneously try to erase the man who helped design it.

The Bird’s Nest stands today as a monument to the enduring power of architectural form over human freedom.
(That and the power of a really good PR team.)

III. Rem Koolhaas Designs a Giant Bureaucratic Möbius Strip

Rem Koolhaas looked at Beijing and decided what it really needed was a building that physically embodied the experience of watching state television:
confusing, continuous, and structurally questionable.

And thus the CCTV Headquarters was born: the world’s first anti-skyscraper skyscraper, bending in on itself the way free thought does inside a surveillance jurisdiction.

Architectural critics called it “bold.”
Citizens called it “Big Pants.”
The Party called it “modernization.”

Everyone left the conversation pleased, which is how you know something is very wrong.

IV. Foster Arrives, Builds an Airport So Nice It Almost Distracts from Reality

Sir Norman Foster—knight of the British realm, lord of the high-tech cantilever—constructed an airport so vast it could hold the GDP of a small nation and still have room for duty-free.

Beijing Capital Terminal 3 is the architectural equivalent of being welcomed to a fancy dinner by a host who has politely concealed all the knives.

Travelers admire the sweeping roof, the amber glow, the effortless circulation.
They rarely notice the cameras.
Good architecture works in mysterious ways.

V. KPF: The Official Supplier of Chinese Financial-Phallic Icons

Every time China needed to announce, “We too have capitalism, but with Chinese characteristics,” KPF produced another vertical exclamation point.

Shanghai World Financial Center: The Bottle Opener of Global Ambition.
Ping An Finance Center: The Razor Blade of Technocratic Discipline.
China Zun: The Ceremonial Wine Vessel of Authoritarian Confidence.

These towers say:
“We may not allow unrestricted markets, but we absolutely allow unrestricted height.”

VI. The Local Heroes the Party Keeps on the Leash

MAD Architects

Beautiful, organic, mist-kissed futurism designed to evoke mountains, clouds, and philosophical harmony.
The Party loves this.
A soft totalitarianism needs soft curves.

Wang Shu

The scholar-architect of salvaged tiles and folk wisdom.
International critics call him a preservationist saint.
The Party calls him useful.

While entire historic districts disappear overnight, Wang Shu’s campus projects politely reassure the world that China treasures its heritage—just not enough to stop demolishing it.

VII. Why Architects Keep Going Back

Because China offers architects three things they can no longer get at home:

1. A blank slate (even if something was already on it).

2. A budget (even if it doesn’t technically exist yet).

3. The ability to build something ridiculous without a neighborhood association staging a protest outside your hotel room.

Western democracies have zoning boards.
China has political directives.
Architects know which one gets a tower built faster.

VIII. Moral Clarity Arrives Late and Leaves Early

Eventually, some architects realize what they’ve enabled.
Usually after the project is completed, photographed, reviewed, award-submitted, monetized, and added to their monograph.

Rem occasionally frowns in an interview.
Zaha (were she still here) would issue a cryptic, elegant shrug.
Herzog & de Meuron pretend they didn’t notice the political implications.
Ai Weiwei posts something devastating and true on Instagram.

But the buildings remain.
Architecture is the perfect accomplice:
silent, tall, photogenic, and incapable of testifying.

IX. What All This Really Means

China didn’t just import architects.
It imported aesthetic cover, cultural endorsement, and the soft glow of global prestige.

And the starchitects?
They got to build the things democracy would never permit.

It is a mutually beneficial relationship wrapped in titanium panels, press releases, and the occasional ethical hangover.

The result is a national landscape of architectural icons that say, with stunning visual clarity:

“Authoritarianism,
but make it fabulous.
